The massive, usually snow-choked entrance of 1623/189, looking north during a surface survey in 1996. Note that the surface survey line does not need to take a physically traversable route ! The normal way past this hole on the way to the middle plateau is a climb up and traverse to its right. The joint forming the left wall in this picture is the same one on which 164 is formed. Beyond 189 and to the left is 171, whilst along a fault scarp to the right lie 190 and B8 (197).
