<h3><a id="ariston">Ariston Series</a></h3>
<p>The Ariston Series is the route to the current deepest point in the cave.
The pitch series begins with a short pitch of 5m rigged from a large thread in
the roof a few metres back, with a single spit for the vertical part, which is
almost a scramble. This lands on a large ledge formed of boulders wedged across
a narrow point, with impressive aven above. There are two choices of descent
here: one to the north, <a href="midlevel.html#veined">You're So Veined</a>
(15m) which was used in 1999, and one to the south, <b><a
href="#potulike">Pot-U-Like</a></b> (~35m) which has been the trade route since
2000.</p>
<h4>You're So Veined route</h4>
<p>One rebelay provides a good hang against the wall of You're So Veined to
reach the foot of the pitch, which is in a spacious shaft, with an impressive
aven above. From here, there are two ways on.</p>
<p><i>To the left, facing away from the pitch just descended, is a gully, which
in 1999 contained a thick layer of ice. Carefully traversing this rather
slippery section leads to the head of a small pitch of 6m, which was rigged
with a Y-hang. From here a walking size phreatic passage, <b><a
id="rainbow">Rainbow</a></b>, leads off, carrying a substantial breeze. The
passage initially descends, but then develops a narrow floor trench; as the
trench deepens, the phreatic part of the passage rises, and then ends abruptly
where the floor trench turns right and leads off as a too-tight rift while
ahead the phreas pinches out.</i></p>
<p>To the right leads into a small, very crumbly chamber, from which a short
section of awkward rift leads to a fine crow's nest in the wall of a large
rift. A very short pitch (5m) lands on a large ledge in the side of the
Pot-U-Like shaft. From here a roped traverse along the left-hand wall gains the
head of the next pitch of 12m, which avoids a large ledge which would have been
in the way but for the traverse. This pitch currently requires a rope protector
just below the Y-hang at the top. The landing is on another large ledge, where
a pool can be used to refill water containers. This is also the landing of
Pot-U-Like.</p>
<h4><a id="potulike">Pot-U-Like route</a></h4>
<p>The pitch is rigged with a traverse line which descends steeply to the nose
of a sloping rock wedged across the rift, from where an entertaining Y-hang on
the left-hand wall provides a free-hang to the base of the pitch. A ledge is
passed a few metres from the bottom.</p>
<p>At the foot of this pitch is a pool of water, or an ice pan, depending on
the conditions that year. Crossing this leads to the head of the next pitch of
14m. A backup bolt is followed by a Y-hang, which utilises one very cratered
spit only usable with a bollard type hanger. This is followed by a deviation
from the opposite wall, providing a clear hang to the bottom. The landing is
on a floor of boulders wedged across the shaft, although it seems sound. A
backup bolt protects the approach to the Y-hang at the head of the next pitch,
<b><a id="toecap">Steel Toecap</a></b> (35m). After a ledge 3m down, where a
deviation optimises the hang, the walls of the shaft bell out dramatically and
the rope hangs in stimulating isolation. About 5m from the floor a ledge is
passed, which could be gained by a swing across, where there may possibly be a
passage leading off [<a href="qm.html#C1999-204-20"
id="qC1999-204-20">C1999-204-20 B</a>].</p>
<p>At the foot of the pitch, the way on is a very chossy, sloping descent which
will require either re-rigging or bypassing (which may be possible by a climb
up and over) in future. This leads to a further short pitch (10m), which lands
in an aven chamber of ample proportions. <i>From here drops an 8m pitch,
landing on a rubble floor. The only way on is a tight rift [<a
href="qm.html#C2000-204-60" id="qC2000-204-60">C2000-204-60 C</a>], which was
penetrated for only a short distance. More progress might be possible by
someone small and imaginative. Not surveyed in 2000.</i> From the aven chamber,
a crawl leads off, followed by a descending rubble slope. The rubble slope
curves round to the right, passing a tight rift on the left [<a
href="qm.html#C1999-204-22" id="qC1999-204-22">C1999-204-22 C</a>], to reach
the bottom of a short climb up of 3m on the right, which is followed by a
scramble down on the other side. <i>From here, straight ahead is a climb up
into the foot of an aven, half-right is a short ascending passage leading to a
chamber where a traverse around the right hand wall leads to a slope down to
<b><a href="#fledermaus">Fledermausschacht</a></b>.</i> Full right is a
stooping/crawling height phreatic passage with a mud floor. This passes on the
right the other end of the crawl which led off from the foot of the previous
pitch, which provides a convenient shortcut.</p>
<p>Some 50m of alternate crawling and stooping over soft crumbly mud, including
a single point where the roof dips and the crawl is flat-out, leads to a small
chamber. Here there are two holes in the floor. One leads to <a
href="#kiwisuit"><b>Kiwi Suit</b></a>; the other drop is much shorter, and is
split into two sections by ledges on each wall part way down. The first section
of 8m reaches these small ledges, where a stream enters from the foot of a very
large aven. The next section of 11m is wet, and lands on a small ledge
overlooking Kiwi Suit just above the rebelay.</p>
<h3><a id="kiwisuit">Kiwi Suit</a></h3>
<p>The first pitch begins with a funnel-shaped opening. The initial approach is
rigged from a large pillar at the edge of the funnel (the approach to this
could be further protected by a traverse line tied round an even larger pillar
a couple of metres back). Suddenly, at the base of the funnel, there is an
impressive black space. In 2000 the descent was rigged New-Zealand style,
entirely from naturals, which seemed sound, but worrisome for us bolt-junkies,
especially given the record of 'Bomb-Proof' naturals in KH visiting the bottoms
of pitches; the current rig as of 2002 uses a pitch-head deviation, and a
Y-hang rebelay around halfway down, to keep the descent clear of walls and the
small trickle of water which falls down the shaft. This looks worryingly like
it would become a huge deluge after rain, drenching anyone on the rebelay, but
even during one epic trip in 2004 when water levels throughout the cave were
extremely high this area was no more than drippy. The floor is reached after 54
metres of descent. The way on is a short traverse, an 8 metre pitch, another
short traverse, and then a 20 metre pitch to a ledge. The final pitch from this
ledge is an impressive rift of 47 metres depth, rigged from a Y-hang backed up
to the pitch above. This is also rather drippy at the bottom if the water
levels are high, but this is not problematic.</p>
<p>The bottom here is the start of the deep and strenuous <a
href="razordance.html">Razordance</a>
series.</p>
<h3><a id="fledermaus">Fledermausschacht</a></h3>
<p>The traverse round to the pitch head is protected by a thread belay at the
start of the traverse. A substantial thread (requiring 2 slings due to its
girth) at the pitch head enables the first, sloping section of the pitch to be
descended. Soon the pitch becomes vertical, and a rebelay on the far wall (at
-5m) allows the next few metres to be descended. Unfortunately the shaft still
hades slightly, and a further two rebelays (at -15m and -28m) are required
before the magnitude of this 112m shaft starts to become apparent. A 40m
free-hanging section leads to a sloping ledge, where the shaft dog-legs again
and a scrappy descent down a gully, and a further two rebelays (at -68m and
-80m), reaches a sloping ledge overlooking the final section of the pitch. A
chossy traverse across the left hand wall appears to head into a parallel shaft
[<a href="qm.html#C2000-204-61" id="qC2000-204-61">C2000-204-61 C</a>]. A bolt
round the corner to the right allows a descent of the final 22m to the floor to
be made, where a boulder choke is met, with no way on. The whole pitch,
particularly the far wall, is rather loose and due care must be taken. A large
chockstone near the second rebelay could not be shifted, but should be treated
with suspicion.</p>
<p>Nature Note: A bat was observed flitting around in here on two
occasions.</p>
<p>At the start of the traverse to the head of Fledermausschacht is a small
crawl leading off to the right. This is initially flat-out over crumbly mud,
but enlarges after a short distance to enter a series of small mud-filled
chambers. There is no obvious way on, other than to start excavations in the
mud banks [<a href="qm.html#C2000-204-62" id="qC2000-204-62">C2000-204-62

<h1>Big Boulders area</h1>
<p><b>Summary</b>: The Big Boulders area is dominated by a large breakdown
chamber and contains a number of unexplored leads. It is accessed from the
<a href="pussyprance.html#prowl">On the Prowl</a> traverse in the Pussy
Prance area.</p>
<h3><a name="dogdays">Dog days</a></h3>
<p>In the southwest corner of the chamber reached from the end
of Puss in Bolts is a 3m pitch. Traversing over this pitch
(rope required) leads into a rift passage. The narrow
continuation of the rift ahead is unexplored [C2012-204-XX B],
but a 3m climb up on the left (bolts placed for a rope) leads
into Dog Days. Comfortable walking passage heads south for 20m,
past a roof tube on the right and via a 3m climb down, to a
complex junction. There are two unexplored passages on the left
at this point ([C2012-204-XX B] and [C2012-204-XX C]).
[FIXME: (Olly/Becka/Andrew) lots of bits here that AD can't remember/knows
nothing about].</p>
<p>The way on is a muddy passage which quickly leads to the
head of an 18m pitch overlooking a large space. Descending
this pitch lands in <a href="#bigboulder">Big Boulder
Chamber</a>.</p>
<h3><a name="bigboulder">Big Boulder Chamber</a></h3>
<p>As its name suggests, Big Boulder Chamber is a large
breakdown chamber containing many huge boulders.
[FIXME: (Andrew/Becka/Julian/Stuart) survey shows QM C downhill from landing point].
From the point at which the rope lands, the way on is
up an unstable rubble slope to the north (care required).
[FIXME: (Andrew/Becak/Julian/Stuart) uncertain about the exact route here - lots of
bits on the survey to the east that AD knows nothing about]
The route continues north through breakdown until a
climb beneath a large boulder on the left leads to a
boulder slope which can be descended with care to a
continuing passage to the north. Shortly beyond the
bottom of the boulder slope, a passage on the right
leads, past a narrow unexplored passage on the right
[C2012-204-XX C] to a muddy, exposed climb up into a possible
phreatic passage with a sound of water [C2012-204-XX B].</p>
<p>The main route continues north in comfortable sized passage
with a draught from south to north. After 10m, a wet aven is
reached on the left [C2012-204-XX X] with a 3m pit beneath
with a narrow rift exiting [C2012-204-XX C]. The continuing
passage gradually narrows and continues for a further 40m to
a T-junction where <a href="#pretzel">Pretzel passage</a>
leads off to the left and right.</p>
<h3><a name="pretzel">Pretzel Passage</a></h3>
<p>Turning right at the T-junction leads immediately to
a local widening with three ways on. West leads immediately
back to the passage from Big Boulder Chamber near the
T-junction. North is a 2m climb and east is a low passage,
both of which ultimately lead to the same place. The easiest
route is to take the low passage to the east.
This quickly opens out to a comfortable sized sandy passage
which proceeds, past a climb up to a narrow passage on the
right [C2012-204-XX C], before the roof lowers again. 10m
further on the roof rises at the base of a 3m climb up on the
left. <i>Up the 3m climb leads to 15m of narrow, sandy,
walking sized passage emerging at the top of the 2m climb at
the start of the passage.</i>. Comfortable sized walking passage
continues north for 10m before turning northwest and descending
gently to the head of an undescended pitch with the sound of
water [C2012-204-XX A]. The pitch is at least 15m across and
stones rattle for at least 8 seconds. There is a draught blowing
from the pitch towards the known cave.</p>
<p>Turning left at the T junction, a sandy slope down to the
right is quickly reached (rope required for a safe descent) with
a passage heading off at the bottom [C2012-204-XX A]. Traversing
across the top of the slope leads to a further passage with an
immediate junction. Left is a steeply ascending passage which
requires protection [C2012-204-XX B]. Ahead, comfortable passage
continues for 8m to a sand choke, with a small continuation
to the left with no draught [C2012-204-XX C]. Right leads, via a
2m climb up, to a muddy rift. This passage proceeds for 30m
reaching the head of an undescended pitch that is at least 20m
across [C2012-204-XX A]. This pitch is 40m away from the pitch
at the end of the other branch of Pretzel Passage, and has a
similar character. There is a draught heading towards this
pitch. A climb up on the right at the pitch head gains access
to a roof tube [C2012-204-XX C].</p>

for 204 exploration. Water was collected from a convenient small hole in the

roof of the stone bridge and funnelled into a plastic butt. A backup supply

was established in the nearby <a href="../231/231.html">Traungoldhöhle</a>

from a much slower-running source. This appears to flow fairly consistently

(even during dry periods).</p>

<p><a href="l/batchamber.html"><img class="onright" src="t/batchamber.jpg"

<h4><a id="conveniencerift">Convenience Rift</a></h4>
<p><a href="l/thinrift.html"><img class="onleft" src="t/thinrift.jpg"
alt="Thin Rift" /></a>The rift starts off as walking passage before becoming tighter, requiring crawling to continue. After a short climb down of 1m, the rift widens again and a second climb of approximately 2m is encountered. This was the limit of exploration in 2004. Beyond the climb the passage continues down another short climb down off of a shale bank. This requires a hand line of 10m which can be belayed from a large flake at floor level. Beyond this point the rift is known as "Convenience Rift".</p>
<p>At the bottom of the climb the passage passes two holes in the floor. The first of these is too tight. The second descends for ~5m and has two passages leading off from the bottom in opposite directions (parallel to Convenience Rift). Both of these are too tight, but it is expected that the North Easterly one connects to the bottom of the traverse further down Convenience Rift.</p>
<p><a href="l/conveniencerift2.html"><img class="onright" src="t/conveniencerift2.jpg"
alt="Convenience Rift" /></a><a href="l/conveniencerift.html"><img class="onright" src="t/conveniencerift.jpg"
alt="Convenience Rift" /></a>Continuing along Convenience Rift a further climb of ~3m is encountered. This can be bypassed by traversing along the right hand wall. A traverse line of ~14m is required and can be belayed to threads at either end of the traverse. A 21m rope is sufficient to rig the preceeding climb and the traverse. Beyond the traverse, the passage turns sharp left and a deep narrow slot in the floor must be traversed at high level. After 10m the slot widens and a passage, well decorated with white popcorn formations, joins from the right. The joining passage can be followed steeply uphill for ~25m to a small chamber. A small hole in the floor of the chamber leads onto a large pitch [<a href="qm.html#C2007-204-01" id="qC2007-204-01">C2007-204-01 A</a>] with a strong draft.</p>
<p>Continuing along Convenience Rift, the passage changes charactor
with mud/sand banks on the right hand wall. The passage passes under a
large aven (QM X) and up a 2m climb before reaching Flush Pitch.</p>
<h4><a id="flushpitch">Flush Pitch</a></h4>
<p><a href="l/flush_pitch.html"><img class="onleft" src="t/flush_pitch.jpg"
alt="Flush Pitch" /></a><a href="l/bowl.html"><img class="onleft" src="t/bowl.jpg"
alt="The Bowl" /></a>Traversing across the top of Flush Pitch (10m of rope and two hangers required) a second pitch is encountered, this connects with flush pitch at the bottom. A passage leading off to the right from the second pitch leads to The Bowl, a pitch leading down to Now Wash Your Hands. The Bowl may be free-climbed for some distance until it becomes too vertical. At this point a sloping, drippy passage doubles back from the main direction of The Bowl and leads to a 2m drop into a shallow pool of water, The Cistern.</p>
<p>Descending Fush Pitch (21m of rope and three hangers required, including the traverse) leads to a small chamber which connects to the bottom of the second pitch. A passage leading south is too tight, and the way on is a crawling sized phreatic tube up a climb to the north. After several twists and turns this emerges at The Cistern. This route is recommended as it avoids the slippery traverse across The Cistern.</p>
<p>From The Cistern a 5m climb down leads to a muddy puddle and a crawl through a small hole. Beyond the hole, awkward thrutching through rift passage leads to a 3m climb down (5m handline an a single hanger required) into a large East-West passage, Now Wash Your Hands. A sloping passage to the left at the top of the climb also leads to Now Wash Your Hands.</p>

walking passage leads to a junction after 15m. The passage to the left
slopes downwards, gradually decreasing in height until it chokes with
mud [<a href="qm.html#C2007-204-02" id="qC2007-204-02">C2007-204-02

right [<a href="qm.html#C2007-204-03" id="qC2007-204-03">C2007-204-03
B</a>]. The passage to the right contains a dead bat not far from the
junction (more decomposed than the one in Dead Good Bat Chamber). The
passage drops into a small chamber beneath an aven (QM X) with a small
tube carrying a stream to the right which ends at an aven [<a href="qm.html#C2007-204-04" id="qC2007-204-04">C2007-204-04

X</a>]. Straight ahead a short climb up leads to a steeply sloping passage which passes two small tubes in the left hand wall [<a href="qm.html#C2007-204-05" id="qC2007-204-05">C2007-204-05 B</a>] before emerging at a large pitch down [<a href="qm.html#C2007-204-07" id="qC2007-204-07">C2007-204-07 A</a>]. The tubes to the left appear to join a parallel passage which also leads to the pitch.</p>
<p>Downslope in Now Wash Your Hands is a muddy boulder filled passage which, after a short climb down, reaches a T-junction. Left at the junction leads to Out Of Order Rift. The passage to the right is reached by a 1.5m climb up a mud bank. Pleasant, walking sized phreatic passage winds gradually downhill. After a lowering of the roof, requiring crawling, Shit Chute joins on the left. This is a steeply sloping tube with a loose muddy floor. Starting as crawling sized it soon enlarges and the floor drops away into a pitch. This can also be reached through Engaged. The main passage continues to a short pitch requiring 10m of rope and two hangers. This enters Engaged.</p>
<h4><a id="engaged">Engaged</a></h4>
<p>
<p><a href="l/engaged_formation.html"><img class="onleft" src="t/engaged_formation.jpg"
alt="Engaged" /></a>
Engaged begins under a drippy aven, with the water flowing down a
hole in the floor which is too tight. Beyond the aven, the passage
trifurcates. The large passage to the right continues across several
large holes in the floor, the first of these is the SLTR pitch which
descends 86 meters to several small sumps. The other holes are as yet
undescended [<a href="qm.html#C2007-204-24"
id="qC2007-204-24">C2007-204-24 A</a>], the continuation of the
passage (requiring a traverse line) is also unexplored [<a href="qm.html#C2007-204-25" id="qC2007-204-25">C2007-204-25 A</a>]. The passage to the left soon reaches another junction. Straight ahead the passage slopes steeply to a pitch [<a href="qm.html#C2007-204-22" id="qC2007-204-22">C2007-204-22 A</a>]. To the left, a large passage leads to a muddy pitch which can be rigged from natural anchors and descended into Channel 5. </p>
<h4><a id="outoforder">Out Of Order Rift</a></h4>
<p>Out Of Order Rift begins as a large, boulder filled passage. After two tight constrictions the passage becomes an awkward rift which slopes downwards. After a few sharp bends the passage widens slightly and another rift, Urinal Cakes, leads off down a hole in the floor. Traversing across the top of Urinal Cakes, Out Of Order Rift continues. A tube on the right connects back into Urinal Cakes whilst the rift continues past several more bends to a junction. To the right a very tight tube leads past several constrictions to a small chamber. The tight tube appears to continue, but is only for the thin enthusiast [<a href="qm.html#C2007-204-09" id="qC2007-204-09">C2007-204-09 C</a>]. To the left, the rift reduces to crawling size before emerging at a pitch, Don't Worry, Pee Happy.</p>
<h4><a id="peehappy">Don't Worry, Pee Happy</a></h4>
<p>Don't Worry, Pee Happy pitch descends for 20m, landing in a small chamber. A hole in the floor behind a lip of rock descends another 10m to a ledge. Descending a further hole with a waterfall going down it leads to a small, crawling passage ending in a tight crawl through water which becomes too tight after about two metres. This is close to connecting to upslope in <a
href="subway.html#thetube">The Tube</a>. From the bottom of Don't Worry, Pee Happy, a horizontal passage leads down several climbs before becoming too tight. This has a strong draft outwards.</p>
<p>Traversing across the top of Don't Worry, Pee Happy leads to a continuation of Out Of Order Rift. After a sharp bend to the left a tube leads off to the right. This passes under an aven with a pool of water at the bottom to link back into the top of Don't Worry, Pee Happy. Straight on leads to another pitch down which takes water [<a href="qm.html#C2007-204-13" id="qC2007-204-13">C2007-204-13 C</a>]. It is almost certain that this links into the bottom of Don't Worry, Pee Happy.</p>
<h4><a id="ch5">Channel 5</a></h4>
<p><a href="l/ch5.html"><img class="onleft" src="t/ch5.jpg"
alt="Channel 5" /></a>Channel 5 is a large boulder slope. Down slope, the passage steepens to a pitch [<a href="qm.html#C2007-204-19" id="qC2007-204-19">C2007-204-19 B</a>]. Up slope,a short climb down leads to a small streamway, this cuts under the boulder slope, and can be followed downstream for some distance before becoming too tight. Upstream ends at an aven, thought to link to Indecent Exposure.</p>

passages, one on top of the other. The lower passage becomes too tight
after ~10m. The upper passage can be followed past a section of flat
out crawling to emerge in a chamber, Indecent Exposure. Climbing down
through the boulders which make up the floor of Indecent Exposure
leads to a pitch down to Channel 5. A passage on the left hand side of
Indecent Exposure leads, via a squeeze up through boulders, to a small

chamber with an aven above [<a href="qm.html#C2007-204-15" id="qC2007-204-15">C2007-204-15 X</a>]. There is a tight hole in the floor of the chamber leading to a pitch [<a href="qm.html#C2007-204-16" id="qC2007-204-16">C2007-204-16 C</a>]. </p>

<p><b>Summary</b>: The Near End series consists of those passages on the level
of the bottom of the 204a/b entrance pitches. It communicates with the <a
href="midlevel.html">mid-level series</a> via either Thread Pitch or Pendulum
Pitch, while a side passage leads to a pitch dropping into <a
href="nopain.html#kingcarbide">'King Carbide</a>, off No Pain No Gain.
Alternatively, in 2006 a link (<a href="#deathglory">Death or Glory</a>) was
discovered leading from the Near End to the <a
href="treeumphant.html#thecolonnade">Colonnade</a>).</p>

<h3>Entrance</h3>

<a href="l/13sle.html"><img class="onleft" src="t/13sle.jpg" alt="204b entrance"
/></a>
The 204a entrance is directly opposite a 10m x 5m <a
href="bridge.html">stone bridge</a> from which it derives its name. The
entrance itself is approximately 8m high and 5m wide, and leads down a boulder
slope and round a right hand bend to the top of the first pitch. The 204b
entrance is 15m away to the north; this was used in 1999, but involves a rather
shoddy sloping descent down a gully, so in recent years the 204a entrance has
been used.</p>
<h3 style="clear: both"><a id="firstpitch">First Pitch</a></h3>
<p>
<a href="l/2p1.html"><img class="onright" src="t/2p1.jpg" alt="First
Pitch" /></a> The 204a entrance leads, via a short climb down, to a ledge
overlooking the first pitch, <b>Trick or Treat</b>. This is rigged with a
traverse line and a Y-hang in the roof, giving a superb and very airy free-hang
to the bottom. The landing is by a large snow plug with an ice corridor round
the right-hand edge leading to the top of a boulder slope. A rift passage on
the right becomes too tight.</p>
<p>The snow level varies: in 2000 it was much higher than in 1999, rendering
the original route onward impassable (see <a href="#route1999">here</a>). A revised
route was explored, which was the main route in 2001. In 2002 and 2003 the snow
was lower again, and the original route was back in use.</p>
<h3><a id="jim">Second and Third Pitches</a></h3>
<p>Descending the boulder slope (care required to avoid kicking rocks off)
leads to the head of the second pitch, <b>Jim'll Fix It</b> (18m in 1999 but
only about 10m in 2000/2001 due to increased snow levels). An unexplored
passage is visible from the pitch head, which could be accessed by a bolt
traverse round the right hand side of the pitch head [<a
href="qm.html#C1999-204-01" id="qC1999-204-01">C1999-204-01 C</a>] (explored
by Brian?). The pitch is rigged from a bolt in the left hand wall with a
deviation from a spit immediately after the pitch head bolt. This protects a
marginal rub point and also avoids a jet of water which spurts from a crack in
the wall after heavy rain.</p>
<p>If the snow level is high, one lands directly on the snow plug. Following
the wall around to the right (facing the wall on which the pitch is rigged)
leads to a 2m climb into a rift, which quickly descends to the head of the

are two ways on: Right leads uphill as stooping/crawling height passage for 30m

<b>The Near End</b> is a collective name for a complex network of
high level phreatic passages which slope approximately 20° following the dip of
the beds. Heading downhill from the base of <a href="#jim">Jim'll Fix It</a> in
a stooping height passage leads round a double bend to a 2m climb down to a
junction. Right leads to more <a href="#nearside">side passages</a> whilst the
main route is straight ahead to a crossroads. Right leads into the same <a
href="#nearside">side passages</a> as the previous right turn. Left is <b><a
id="needle">Needle Crawl</a></b> past an unexplored passage on the left [<a
href="qm.html#C1999-204-04" id="qC1999-204-04">C1999-204-04 C</a>] and a crawl
on the right (feels like straight ahead) which becomes too small after ~8m.
Straight ahead (feels like a left) leads to the head of a fine 4m diameter
circular shaft, <b><a id="thread">Thread Pitch</a></b>. This pitch of 17m
corresponds to the lower half of <a href="#stitch">Stitch This</a>, and leads
into <a href="midlevel.html#wolp">Wolpertinger Way</a>. A continuation of the
crawl is visible at the opposite side of the pitch head; this is choked after
5m or so.</p>
<p>From the crossroads, the main route in 1999 was straight ahead, downhill in
mostly stooping height passage with a short section of sandy crawling. After
15m is a short climb down to the top of a 4m deep pit with a too-tight passage
at the bottom, with the phreatic passage continuing to the right. After a
further 10m the passage is intersected by a large rift with a big rock
partially blocking the passage. Climbing up to the right leads back into a tall
rift in the <a href="#nearside">side passages</a>. A climb up to the left leads
to a passage containing attractive white mud which was not entered, however a
visual connection to the <a href="midlevel.html#pendulum">Pendulum Pitch</a>
was established.</p>
<p>Straight ahead leads to a further junction after 15m. Left opens out to the
head of <a href="midlevel.html#pendulum">Pendulum Pitch</a>, the main route to
the bottom of <a href="midlevel.html#wolp">Wolpertinger Way</a> used in 1999.
Right leads to a narrow stooping height passage which continues for 25m with
several clear pools in the floor to a widening. Around the widening, most
routes ahead and to the left are choked with boulders. There are two ways on.
On the left-hand side is a small awkward chamber, from which a short pitch
leads into <a href="nopain.html#kingcarbide">'King Carbide</a>. On the right,
crawling up over unpleasant sharp mobile boulders leads to a body sized tube
sloping slightly upwards. After around 15m it twists left to land in a muddy
puddle at a slight widening in the passage, which continues for another 3m or
so to a low chamber, <b><a id="kidneybean">Kidney Bean</a></b>, possibly an
enlarged bedding plane. A hole in the floor in the chamber is blind. At the
northern end of the chamber is a narrow crawl; this connects with a wider
crawling passage leading off from a junction at the end of the body-sized tube.
The combined passage enlarges to stooping size and continues past old gour
pools to a low mud squeeze. This was passed in 2006 after some excavation to
emerge in a low bedding chamber, <b><a id="deathglory">Death Or Glory</a></b>.
Straight ahead is a horrendous boulder choke (Death), with a propensity to drop
large rocks on people. Slightly to the right of this is a narrow crawl with a
hole in the floor; this is a 3m chimney climb down (Glory), emerging in <a
href="treeumphant.html#waterfall">Waterfall Chamber</a> at the end of the
Colonnade. Back in the bedding chamber, one can crawl up to the right to a
junction with several small tubes, all of which are too tight.</p>
<h3><a id="nearside">The Near End: Side Passages</a></h3>
<p>The first two right turns encountered when heading downhill from the foot of
<a href="#jim">Jim'll Fix It</a> unite in a walking sized passage. After 10m
the bottom of <a href="#umshit">Umshitshimbo</a> is passed on the right, whilst
straight ahead leads to a junction with a large keyhole passage. Left leads
after 15m to a climb up behind a precariously placed boulder, to an immediate
climb down of 4m which emerges in the 1999 main route through the near end
before <a href="midlevel.html#pendulum">Pendulum Pitch</a>. Right leads
immediately to a 8m pitch. A difficult and exposed traverse round the left hand
wall leads to a further 30m of passage with a steadily lowering roof
culminating in a boulder choke.</p>
<h3><a id="umshit">The Near End: Umshitshimbo and Updip Passages</a></h3>
<p><b>Umshitshimbo</b> is a fine phreatic ramp, 2m wide and about 4m high,
which heads uphill in a straight line for 40m. At the top a passage doubling
back on the right leads back to the base of <a href="#jim">Jim'll Fix It</a>
and there is a climb up into a rift passage heading south over the top of
Umshitshimbo which becomes too narrow. Large passage continues uphill past a 2m
deep blind pit on the right to a junction.</p>
<p>Left leads uphill past a choked inlet on the left to a steep uphill section
with a crawl on the right, which leads shortly to a 2m climb down and immediate
choke. At the top of the steep section the passage to the right immediately
chokes, whilst left is <b><a id="parton">Dolly Parton Climb</a></b>, a 2m climb up with huge jugs,
to a further 15m of upward trending phreatic passage, terminating in a boulder
choke with a slight draught (air coming into the cave). There are two small
steep phreatic ramps on the left hand side of this passage, both very small and
both choked.</p>
<p>Straight ahead at the junction leads through a short section of rift to an
enlargement with an alcove on the right and a keyhole passage ahead. The rift
section at the bottom quickly becomes choked, with a slight draught coming in.
A 3m climb gains access to the phreatic section which goes over the top of the
choke, and about after a further 3m reaches a large boulder, which almost
blocks the passage with a strong breeze blowing through the gap (into the
cave.) Squeezing through yields a steeply ascending rocky crawl which chokes
after about 5m.</p>
