115 - Tuesday 115 Wave 1
Tuesday David & Ian Brindle rig first section of ramps. 4 new bolts placed. One on short pitch near entrance made redundant as no likes prusikking up this delightful short pitch. Ramp declared open and much improved. Fall off ramp whilst trying to place bolt, give up ! Second wave arrives and takes over rigging ramp.

115 - 27th Tuesday 115 wave 2
A good trip for dropping tackle, though all recovered this year unlike last year's ammo can. The entrance series to 115 hasn't changed much, grotty as ever. We reached the head of the ramp and voices, the Bouncing Brindles were buggering about with bolts. After some discussion we took over and Mike bolted a rather greasy traverse and a greasier abb down to the foot of the Ramp - but out of the big hole which caused so much complaint last year. The seemingly endless piece of Marlow took us half way down the Rift pitches to a rather frighteningly perched half ton boulder. We slung a rope on the next pitch and exitted. A good 8 hr breaking in trip and having dropped a tackle bag, hammer, driver, gloves numerous times and sealing ring we should both have exhausted our golden boot potential.

Having calculated all the tackle to the nearest inch, the rigging in was bound to be superbly efficient and smooth - WRONG ! The entrance pitch was easy, then Andy tried to pioneer a new route to Fox's Glacier. Once a safe route was relocated, life got complicated since Point Five Gully was completely iced over - exit one 50+m rope meant for lower down. More big ice formations in Barnsley Methodist Chapel then cock-up no. 2, a 15m rope for a 14m pitch with a 10m belay. A 22m rope didn't quite reach, much to Andy's annoyance, so exit another 50+m rope meant for lower down. The next rope was perfect though, and the smooth efficiency started to appear. Rigged right on down the Opera House and Purple Pit to -210m and dumped remaining tackle (just one short rope) before muesli crawl. Then up and out to a rainy, dark, grotty evening. 7 hrs.
Desperate walk back in wet black gravity. Missed pub but beer in car.

Surface survey - from 113 to 115
Having been shown where 113 lurks, we surveyed down the gully & along the path to 115. We used two staffs, compass, clino & tape.

We left permanent survey stations outside 113, halfway down the 113 gully, at 87, at 88 and outside 115. 113 is 164m or something above 115. Caused much amusement to local tourists. <---- ''This ain't caving'' but it is relevant

115 - Wave 1 115 Rigging rift
Another half past six start so we were down in good time. The less said about this trip the better. I couldn't find last year's route in the rift so nearly gave myself a hernia placing a free-hanging bolt of which more anon. Then under the boulders at the top of the inlet pitch which was a fairly trepidating experience. Mucked about with a couple of ladders at the entrance, met wave 2, and then we'd made a pig's ear of it & went out.

115 - Wave 2 115 Rigging to Big Chamber
Well the sun was shining so wave 2 only reached the cave at half three. God I hate this strenuous boring entrance series. Down the Ramp, mucho improved. Incidentally, we passed wave 1 at the Bell Pitch - we we late or were they early ? Chas had rigged a fine free hanging bolt but it was removed and the old route taken down to the inlet. After much indecision whether to go over or under the boulders we bolted out under, and on each successive wet pitch we traversed out as far as we could, using the rope from the pitch above as aid, to bolt. This made the changeovers strenuous but the pitches are dry. At last we dropped down the fine pitch into the Chamber, still as big as ever, the stream seemed quite high. Andy didn't say much (his first trip) but I coukd see he was enjoying it really. We dumped rope, food, hexy burners, sardines etc. and had some tomato & beef soup (yeurgh). Hastened slowly out. Emerged at about two in the morning. Andy got really pissed off as his Petzl Stinky needed twice as much carbide as mine despite having a 14 litre jet anstatt the usual 21. 11 hrs.
The furry suit is starting to niff a bit after only two trips.

The first big trip - jeez were we knackered ! Full of beans, literally, Pete made a jet assisted walk in. Surprisingly efficient trip in with tackle bags. The Ramp is different but no easier. Some entertaining rigging on the Inlet Pitches. And then Purgatory, what can one say, it goes on and on and on. We rigged the Pre-sump Pitch, then the Post-sump Bypass Pitch. On into the stream, considering the quantity of rain there was pleasingly low water. We rigged the first three streamway pitches, 7m slopping + damp, 5m, new bolt to make the next 40m pitch drier. Carried on down a rather wet climb with grotty memories of last year, we decided it needed a rope and that we'd turn around before we got cold. Going back Purgatory was longer and destroyed a tackle bag and a boiler suit. Soup in the main chamber provided just enough body heat to combat the chill acquired waiting to brew it ! From then a sleepy exit was made, both of us nodding off at strategic points on the entrance pitches, and on the Stogerweg on the way back.

113 - Sonnenstrahlhöhle 1623/113
The usual early start got us underground by ~1pm with only mild wittering on the entrance rebelay. Things went rather more smoothly than on Tuesday, rerigging Point Five Gully with a 36m rope, thus freeing the 53m rope for Sprucy Wind. Further success on the 14m pitch led us on to the Opera House where Mike found a missing bolt. Purple Pit was as magnificent as ever (Mike didn't appreciate the Bowers rebelay). Muesli Crawl was located and Sprucy Wind rigged... The squeeze at the pitch head gave Andy some trouble but the main trouble was the Union of Bullshitting Spastic Speleologists rope protector of which more later... Pitches rigged with minimal slack (one with tension between the bolts, much to Mike's chagrin - but the rope only just reached the next rebelay anyway). At least one bolt on the next section wasn't located, leaving a ~35m section with a couple of rubs :- must fix this next time. Needless to say - the rope was too short on the wet part and Andy had a brief spell of pitch rigging by braille and ended with a knot to pass at the final ledge. Then.... the bottom.

The chamber at the pitch bottom quickly became littered with bolts, hangers and solid rubber trussing gear as yopur intrepid speleos prepared to face ... THE SQUEEZE. Urgh ! Gnnuk ! Pop ! Into the Crematorium and the near silence of a dry chamber. Tripping over drystone walls as they went, the heroes, now over a thousand feet below the black hell of Schwarzmooskogel in the remote Austrian Alps .. What ? Oh, sorry - facts only. We looked briefly at some climbs and then shinned down into the narrow rift found by Tony's carbide lamp in 1980. More thrutching noises, grunts, groans and sundry curses accompanied desperate slow, woofta-ripping progress along a crawling rift over a four inch stream slot among muddy, sharp crumbly rock. This led for ages down tiny hading climbs to a micro-stream. More awkward climbs with lobbing lumps of rock dropped to Andy's limit of 1980 - the promising ongoing passage was huge ! after removing stones it was almost 4" (10cm) wide with a half-body-sized cavity beyond. We extended it about 2ft (60cm) horizontally and even less depth. SO much for top entrances to Stellerweg ! Turning round and getting out took less than an hour or so, only slightly shredded. I don't think Mike really appreciated being taken down here at all.

So ... OUT ! Re-assuringly steady progress up the pitches interrupted only by the crappy UBSS protector falling down the rope and landing on Andy. Don't they have croc clips in Bristol ? Sardines at Muesli Crawl galvanised the team to upward progress at almost exactly the same speed as before, slowing as the boulders became oppressive at the Opera House. Not far to go now chaps ! Just the thrutchy boulder and the loose scree and the glassy ice slope and the endless upward slogging entrance pitch and the bolt and the blasted bouncy bunde blocking bludering blacked-out bleary-eyed (insert a plural word meaning cavers but beginning with 'B'), from their rightful place on the outside skin of the sphere we laughingly call the earth, or something. End Delirium.

We walked back in the dark and missed the pub.

A leisurely start saw us underground by 3 O'Clock. The memory has faded by now but we rigged the last three year's pitches. The next is a pleasant 10m pitch and shortly afterwards a slightly bigger pitch we didn't go down. At the time we thought it might be a climb but it definitely isn't.

We took some food and a stove down to the sump bypass and had a brew of disgusting soup in the Big Chamber on the way out.

Oh and we put backup bolts on some of the other streamway pitches. Out at 5.20 in the dawn light. Andy kept falling asleep on the walk back.

142 - SMK Prospecting south of 41 on east side of Schwarzmooskogel
With three of us strung across the 'bunde' we covered quite a lot of ground, and yet this amounted to probably only 10% of the area we crossed. And caves do appear in the middle of nowhere. The major joint trends are easy to follow but largely unproductive being full of small non-draughting shafts. Valleys are much more promising and consequently full of bunde. Two decent prospects were found.
131
A large classical cave entrance strewn with boulders in a prominent valley. Back bearings to Trisselberg 170°, Bergrestaurant 240°. Probably about 1720m. Best reached from the cairned path along the ridge top, which leaves Stogerweg at cave 28.
132
Small hole immediately below an ice + stone plugged shaft. Very good draught out. About 250m south of 41 at approx same height. No bearings. Best reached from the Stogerweg 200m before 32, climb beneath a small cliff, then up diagonally through bunde to large grassy + rocky slope. Climb to top right of this slope to find the ice plugged shaft.

41 - Phreatic
Alpine style starts at 0600 hours just don't work for C.U.C.C. so a leisurely start meant we felt vaguely human as we descended the usual boring entrance. Excitement at the wet pitches with a roar of water (it had been raining). We descended hurtling down through the spray footing it from wall to wall to avoid the worst. Vague doubts about the return are dispelled as we soar down into the Big Chamber. Food was dumped (fromk the tacklebag) and we scrambled into the connection. Damn we're lost. Back and forth, eventually we are on a ledge in 41 but 10m above the floor ! Shit ! BAck again and at last we've done it. On into the Dartford Tunnel - this is huge but better things are to come. Turning left to last year's terminus. Excitelment increases - we are in virgin passage - no, still old footprints in the sand ahead. Suddenly an inscription "cucc/UBSS 81" in the mud and ahead a sloping traverse. This was quickly overcome and ahead a stomping passage leads to - what ? A small climb is overcome and we cross a deep rift with a roar of water but ahead the phreatic tube continues. We're almost running now, pinting out features, not listening, the tension is incredible, a feeling of "how long will it last?" Suddenly a junction with a dry Purgatory in the floor and a dead bat. Hardly pausing we push up Rampant Passage, slower now, panting with exertion and excitement, this tube rises a hundred feet in two hundred feet of length. At the top we suddenly emerge into Cologne Cathedral, a silent but huge chamber. A dangerous climb leads to 30m Echo Aven. We return and push down the rift. Ahead the roar of water and suddenly we're hanging out over over an enormous streamway, water cascades down out of sight. We can't go on so we survey grade 2 out in what we've found. A magnificent trip and the sunset on the Trisselwand as we emerged was quite superb. This was continental caving as I'd really imagined it.

143 - Prospecting, 131, 132
We had intended to go down the streamway in 115, but all the rain the day before and the swollen becks on the surface at the Bergrestaurant caused us to make a nearly sensible decision. Unfortunately the restaurant was closed and we didn't have the face to go straight back so we tramped to 115, thought some more, and decided to go back to yesterday's finds. The bunde was piss wet, so were we, maybe slightly in the head too.

First to 132, clad in T-shirts + Wetsuit top + jeans, Phil dropped in, squirmy entrance, dug through some stones into a low phreatic tunnel, no draught. Mike tracked the draught, dug out some boulders and revealed masses of phreatic passage, hading ramps and possible big pitches. This is almost certainly another entrance into the top of Stellerweg hohle. There are also a number of ramps upwards, two of which were traced to earthworm size wet holes alluringly near to the surface. There must be potential for a higher entrance to the system. Worth going back to but we're keeping the location secret until 115 is surveyed. The exploration was halted by a shortage of light and sore knees.

131. Just a quick look, another steep ramp, but no horizontal development in the top 30m. Holes in the ramp of tight vadose stream character, with a drop estimated at 80m.

115 - Pushing (team hydrophobia)
Got down to Main Chamber in 1½ hrs for Dig Bicks, then to sump in 1½ hrs, then added a short rope to the stream "Yet another pitch" before continuing. Rebelayed the Letch Pitch to make it slightly less damp though with a bit more enterprise and penduling through the waterfall a comfortable rebelay may have been managed farther round to the right; but it was too cold for acrobatics. Below 'the Slit', Andy + CHas' last pitch, the stream meandered on to a fairly grotty looking pitch 'Coming Soon' which we rigged and then jacked through coldness and the ever pesent paranoia that the damned stream is out to get us. Met Tim + Pete at foot of Letch pitch and left them with the glory hunt and tales of gathering clouds on the surface. Not too hard on exit, it just takes so long, and Mike had a lot of trouble with his genitalia; endeavouring to return them to a state of prepubescence by the application of a non too comfortable prussik truss.

As last year the trips are getting heroically long to place a couple of bolts, and hydrophobia is rife. We definitely need some sustained fair weather, or else we'll all be reduced to surveying trips.

115 - Pushing (team gastonomic)
Team gastronomique went down with the express intention of blitzing the food dumps; if the cave went a little bit further than last time then it was purely by accident.

Got quickly to main chamber + made do with a couple of Mars Bars. Blatted on down Purgatory + met Phil + Mike at Letch pitch on their way out. Brief pause to unload unruly bowels. Continued to Slit pitch where some rather desperate rope damage was skilfully concealed with a rope protector. Next pitch was Phil + Mike's undescended 8m pitch which landed in a pleasant, gently sloping canal. Sauntered on down, passage looking more + more sump-like every step. Rounded corner to see sump. Sighs of relief could be heard all the way back to the main entrance. Unfortunately.... youthful over-enthusiasm on the part of Plank caused him to plunge into a rather deep dank pool + find a duck with a few inches of air space out under one wall. Trying not to think of upstream bowel movements + ignoring little brown submarines in the pool, our intrepid team swam through more cnal (the final sump can't be far now can it ?) leading to yet another pitch - Orgasm Chasm. Rigged ~ 40 ft to a ledge then 40ft to another ledge. Still couldn't see the bottom. Pretty spray-lashed chamber - very impressive. Came out. Stopped for a brew at sump bypass food dump. Stopped for another at main chamber. Came out pretty slowly. May have had less to do with fatigue than with the weight of Dig Biccies being carried in tummies.

Second attempt to survey Purgatory. Dave & Chas followed us down - about 1 hr 20 mins to Main Chamber. An hour later we were still there trying to get the clino to be visible - all fogged up. Janet put it in a pocket whilst we chatted to Phil & Pete - then took itn out to discover it was perfectly clear. Surveyed 9 stations down Purgatory when it fogged up again. Philip tried everything - breathing on it, sucking it, licking it - sticking it in armpits etc. whilst Janet painted a mark. Got it visible again and surveyed - with several clino problem breaks - until station 24 when it became completely unmanageable. Painted mark & came out - sane but cold. A quick dash around phreatic passage to Pebble Beach Chamber and the drafty hole to warm up + back to main chamber for sardines (later regretted). My old man said "Follow the van..." geddit ? Gertcha !

Well . . . . what can I say ? Preparing for a long trip, Dave put on long johns, wetsuit, furry suit, pullover, cagoule and overalls. Unfortunately he could barely move and had to take off a layer or two at the Ramp. Down the Purgatory was as nasty as ever. Then, past the Confluence and "Yeeeeeeeah !" I've never been as near having an orgasm underground as when I saw the smoked "CUCC 82" in the roof. Suitably encouraged by the easy way out, we pressed on. A pleasant series of pitches lead to the Duck. Yeurgh !! Chas did well to survive in just a furry suit. Then - Orgasm Chasm. Jeez what a shaft ! We put in two bolts and a large freehang 150+ dropped to (no not a floor) a ledge. Another bolt but rope too short. Still no floor. Back (bounce) up (bounce) the Interalp (bounce) which stopped bouncing when it caught and I was prussiking up an iron bar ! Shit. We've now been under 9 hours so exit. Large gonk at sump bypass. At confluence we gratefully climbed up into the phreas. The way to 115 is about half a mile of walking and traversing. Towards the end we were stopping every 50m for a rest. In the Big Chamber, we had a really bad gonk for 25 minutes or so - I began to wonder if we'd make it. Once the prussiking had started it wasn't so bad but it was slow hard progress all the way. The Bell Pitch alone took 15 minutes. Then the crawl out to a painful dawn. In silence we changed and walked back to the Loserhütte. The sight of Mike asleep in his car was very welcome indeed. At long last we could relax, after sixteen and a half hours unbroken struggle with this fierce cave.

Aim: to push the streamway found by Ian + Dave beyond the railway tunnel in Stellerweg.

Met Janet + Phil in Big Chamber, then through the connection; route finding being moderately easy - following footprints. Heard Janet + Phil surveying in Purgatory when we were at connection cairn. In Junction Chamber we shot up the big passage and missed the turning left to the railway tunnel. We eventually got to the point where traversing became nasty + realized our mistake; but it should be possible to go much further up here. Down the railway tunnel with various climbs up & down and a jump across the top of the stream canyon; we reached a corner where the traverse ran out; so freeclimbed down ~5m to the stream below, we were amazed to find arrows pointing upwards, smoked onto the wall and then a pitch, nicely rigged: we were in the 115 streamway, we trogged down to the sump just to make sure. We had dropped down at the Confluence. We went back up the "Stellerweg Inlet", which starts off larger than Purgatory, but soon breaks down into inlets; we freeclimbed ~7m pitch, but eventually gave up when it was getting tight. There didn't seem any easy way of getting up into the dry stuff, so we went back to the Confluence and climbed up there. Rigged a traverse with a rope (before this we managed to avoid the jump across the stream by following a parallel ramp on the left). We had a prod around in many of the passages, but they all seem to close down as inlets; so there doesn't seem much prospect for any great extension. Coming back found a phreatic tube/crawl which bypassed the cairn + a small passage with some _straws_ ! Dropped back into the Purgatory to avoid the traverse near 115.

The trip that took four days to start ! Doug & Andy had even got changed outside the entrance for one attempt before jacking. Finally underground at 12.30 on Thursday ... now read on ...

Zapped down to Opera House then started survey from station 1980/S27 at the thread. Keine promble down Purple Pit confirming previous "survey" to 1980/SA0 at the last bolt. Zoomed through muesli crawl to Sprucy Wind where Andy relieved the tension in the rebelay (not without hassle). Then zipped down the rope to the bottom. Thrutched into the Crematorium where Andy started and Doug finished a bolt to protect a daring climb onto the loose muddy sloping ledge. Doug did the daring deed of deadly dangerous desperate daring (Bzzzzz! "repetition"). Onto the ledge and along past a thread (runner) and onto the base of the ramp. Needless to say, but I'll say it anyway, this didn't go. Doug reached the base of an unscalable 15m aven and the hoped for streamway bypass was unfound. Derigged the whole of Sprucy Wind and the last bit of Purple Pit. Exitted (very slowly with more cursing / unit depth than previously seen this year) with 150m rope + hangers & Co. & Co. Out @ midnight to v. nice moon.

surface - Dachstein walking trip
Quite a drive to Ramsau am Dachstein, aided by a [?] of beer and snacks. Once there we looked at the walk up, looked at the Seilbahn tariff, looked at the walk again and decided that 150 S would be well spent on a return ticket. The ride is very steep and goes up 1000m in a single span. The path looks appalling from the Seilbahn - very exposed & scree-covered. Besides it's better to save your energy for when you get to the top.

Most of the glacier is flat, mushy snow without crevasses. We took a walk up the Hoher Gjaidstein 2,7 hundred and something. Fine view of the Trisselwand and of Hoher Dachstein from the top. It looks quite easy to get up Hoher Dachstein so this must be done next time.

Doug and Andy W went to play on the bergschrund & Andy D and Chas found a snowslope to learn braking and glissading on. Standing glissade is really fun. We rushed back, missed a bahn by one minute and had to wait for the last one down - by this time the weather had really come down and the lightning was flashing. We met a real alpinist and his son, draped round with sitharnesses, chest harnesses, pegs, nuts, etriers, crampons, enormous coils of rope, u.s.w., u.s.w. A very good day out.

Chas.

P.S. the altitude (or something) made us fart like drains. We think methane comes out of solution at low pressures.

Tim and Phil nearly went underground, but fitness doubts in training and intense precipitation caused a sensible decision to be made. Instead, tackle for a camp was assembled and carried up to 115.

Did anyone cave ? No. I think not. The three day cycle strikes with a vengeance: it certainly can't be the sunshine that keeps us above ground.

Somebody write in this space. So as I can have a clean page for the next write up.

115 - Sunday/Monday 8/9th August
We went in with Paddy and Dave as Sherpas to ferry four tackle bags and a 50m rope to the phreas above the Stellerweg - Purgatory confluence. A camp was established on a moderately flat sandy patch in a side passage with very little draught. Shitting facilities, upwind, in an abandoned vadose groove. Water at the Confluence, a ten minute round trip.

After Rams Bras + Dig Bix we went on a pushing trip. Rerigged ORgasm Chasm, same bolts so enterprisingly installed by Chas + Dave, different rope. Both had lots of fun shuffling ropes and knots and rebelays suspended 200' up the gaping hole. The big pitch ~150', is really great to descend but a nerve wracking slog up, listening for twangs and rubs. Orgasm Chasm finally rigged with a 3m descending traverse line, two ~12m pitches, a 7m, 45mm, round a col, 15m. At the floor of the Chasm, the water runs down a rift in one corner, followed round to a black slit hole. On the opposite side of the Chasm to the final rope, an archway leads into a semi-abandoned passage, with a 6m pitch and then the same black slit as above. Put a bolt on this but didn't descend, sounds about 100' deep - could this be the end ? Don't miss next week's exiting episode. The return trip was dogged by light problems. Four boxes of wet matches, two dud cigarette lighters, a self destructing leaky ammo can led to several anxious moments. Good advert for Timex watches, still running after a 60' drop and two hours immersed in water - not so Casio watches.

Back to camp at 2am, dry clothes, warm pits, soup, spag bol, egg noodles, dig bix, cigarettes and a comfortable kip till midday. Nice not to be woken by the sun, or to know that it had pissed with rain all night. Just as above ground the worst part of camping is getting out of a warm pit into the cold air and then into cold damp caving gear. A grade IV Yorkshire change.

On our way back to the surface we were rather pissed off not to meet the next wave of campers, our camp followers. A little trickle of rain had frightened them away, they sat in Bar Fischer and auctioned off our cassette tapes, hash, etc. Good to have friends. Exit from camp only took 3½ hours, including further extensive stops to get carbides going, Phil having prussiked up his own prussik sling in the dark ! Emerged to daylight, Mike and Andy to meet us, veg curry, beer and the munchies.

115 - (no date transcribed) Schnellzughöhle : The Survey?!
A 'gentle' introduction to the system for Andy - whose light was in his car (oops). Down on Chas's light (Thanks Chas) but with no water - at first. Pete and Andy soon had hands cold enough to grab water and make ice cubes, but we refrained and carried on surveying and surveying and surveying and surveying and surveying and s u r v e y i n g   a n d   s u r v e y a w n. Met Paddy and Dave coming the other way in their sherpa trip, so added them to the survey party leaving Andy to sketch only. This didn't help as his light ran out of water. Anyway, we stopped at the top of the Ramp. Relief for Andy also meant light for Andy, but a nasty burnt urea smell for all concerned. Thrashed out - 6 hrs ? What is this ? A short trip ?!! Unheard of !.

115 - Tuesday / Wednesday 10/11 August 115 Pushing ? + Camping
It rained all night on Monday night but we still went down even though it looked a bit wet. Got u/g at ~12 to be greeted almost immediately by the sound of rushing water in places which are normally dry. Took a long time to get to big chamber owing to failure of Mikes big stinky. Found way through Purgatory Bypass surprisingly easily only went wrong way twice. The water at the Confluence looked rather high but we decided to push on down. Got as far as the 2nd pitch in Orgasm Chasm which we found _FULL_ of water. Andy tested it with his foot and retreated. We reluctantly jacked and had an uneventful trip out apart from meeting Pete + Andy W in streamway (and being later woken up by them) Our only achievement on this trip was removing some rubbish from the camp.

Went down the streamway thought it rather wet but pressed on and surveyed from the 12 foot climb downstream. Met Andy + Mike who'd jacked because of water. Got to the head of the Marlow climb where we decided to turn back because of extreme cold, worries about the water, single bolt rigging, etc. So we surveyed the dry bit from Confluence almost to the Big Chamber, stopping at the camp for a meal. Out not too rapidly.

The Sump
Rabbit Rabbit Rabbit !

As we entered, sun was beating down & promised to hold. This was the last pushing trip cos time was out - derigging would have to start tomorrow. We met Mike & Dobbers at inlet pitches and learnt to our dismay that they had been foiled by water in Orgasm Chasm. This meant that photo gear had to be abandoned at the camp for an all out push. As we entered the streamway the water seemed higher than usual. We pushed quickly on - I was thinking of the wet pitch found by Tim & Phil but knew we'd go on until bolts or rope ran out regardless of time. Duck was not too bad and onto Orgasm Chasm. On the big drop were two ropes - Chas went down the one with no knot on the end but spotted it in time (phew). The pitches became wetter and then the 100'. I vegetated while Chas placed one wet freehanging bolt then down into a cold spray lashed chamber. We rushed into a corner to fettle. Poking among enormous boulders we dropped into the stream again, through a canal and to a 20' pitch. No, it was a free climb and suddenly a sump. Just a rift with a very deep scummy pool. No great thrill, no cheers or handshakes, we traversed over to check for a bypass, but I think we knew this was it and we were getting cold so a slow return to camp was made. A good meal and a King Edward Cigar to celebrate, and a good nights sleep meant a speedy exit the next day. It's very hard to get out of bed when it's dark even at 1pm. We hitched back to camp and revealed all - I think they were all very pleased though cavers aren't prone to outbursts of emotion.

Just for a change of cave we derigged 113 from Purple Pit to the entrance. Apart from one trip down Lost Johns and a couple down 132, 115 is the only cave both of us had been in in the last twelve months. Sonnenstrahlhohle is a fine pot, great shame its not the entrance to 115. Positively speleoorgasmic entrance. Some pretty hair-raising bolts though, even if they are well positioned. In and out in 3½ hours. Then we had to walk back avec beaucoup de tackle; there are far more pleasurable ways of putting your back out than carrying 120m of rope and a rucksack full of caving gear; but such means are not so readily available. We went up Hoher Dachstein. Across the glacier - saw one uncovered crevasse - up a snowslope & then via an incredible number of fixed enormous pegs to the top. Having carried beer up for summit celebrations Chas reached the top, dumped the sack and broke a bottle, flooding several people's gear. Weather got worse & we came down. V. fine walk.

115 - Friday / Saturday 13/14 August 115 Derigging & Surveying
Got down to the bottom in about 5 hours, where we ritually peed in the sump and photographed it. Its rather similar to the one in Penyghent, in a rift, and looking as if it goes deep. There is a small passage going up above the sump, but it is full of boulders and we didn't think it was the time to start digging. We surveyed and derigged the two big pitches in 5 hours and managed to take the tackle thru the duck before it all got too much and we left it at the head of the last streamway pitch. 4½ hours, 60 stations and 5 bars of chocolate later we decided we were bored with surveying and jacked in at the head of last year's undescended pitch. We arrived back at camp after 16½ hrs caving and ate a vast amount before we went to bed. We met Chas & Dave at the camp, then Andy + Mike who relieved us of tackle bags at the bottom of the rift pitches. The entry was rather slow due to severe abrasion problems in very sensitive areas. Just managed to see the fireworks as we came out.

115 - Surveying
Good late start, but not too inefficient down to Ramp. Survey went rather slowly. Like everywhere else in the cave, its a bastard to sketch the ramp. You can tell how slow progress was when two of us had time for 4 (four) pisses and one shit at just one rebelay. Surveying hurriedly (but not too quickly) out of the serious odour zone, we heard Pete & Andy coming up from below. Not wishing to collide part way down a rope, we waited and then carried gear for the deriggers to the entrance. Out in time for an aerial view of the fireworks. Rotten traffic jams in Altaussee.

115 - Saturday / Sunday 13/14th [actually 14/15th, Ed.] 115 Surveying, Derigging, photoing, bat rescue, etc.
Gortcha !

After wogging all the beans and tuna, leaving only sardines for the other intrepid speleos, we went quickly down to the camp & met Pete & Andy there. Dismayed to find quite a bit of surveying still to be done, from the free climb above the Pool Pitch down to last year's undescended pitch. This took us over 100 legs of fast surveying to grade 3. We had Dave's Photo gear & photoed the Pool Pitch on the way. Went on down to the duck where Chas bravely volunterred to venture into the icy water, the cold clutching at his vitals, while Dave stood in up to his waist & took several stunning action photos. Then we derigged out as far as the head of the Pool Pitch and left all the tackle there. This involved some tremendous activity with a pulley and jammer courtesy of Brindle haulage Ltd. - Chas's footloops were nearly sawn in half. Back to camp for an ausblaten meal.

Leisurely start on Sunday. We piccied the Dartford Tunnel at length - at least Dave piccied it while unwilling photographer's assistant scurried round in the dark letting off flashguns. We found several bats in the phreas & brought out three, carefully packed in a tin, having photographed one in situ first. This brings the known total of bats to about 5 and makes me wonder whether the phreas does connect to the surface somewhere down the hill.

Photographed the Rift pitches & Bell pitch on the way out & exited to a colossal thunderstorm. The walk back was the most desperate part of the trip & we were grateful to Mike for being in the carpark.

Spent many hours hauling 4 amazingly heavy tackle bags up from top of Lake Pitch to camp, then carried 2 on to Stellerweg chamber where we rigged a rope down the climb. So to bed, only to be woken by Andy & Andy at ~3 in the morning. Next day we derigged to camp, had a bonfire with the rubbish & carried all the gear back to Big Chamber. The inlet pitches were extremely wet indeed. So we left the tackle bags we were carrying at the top of chamber pitch + got ourselves out. But to redeem the situation we brought one of the heavy tackle bags Andy + Andy had left at the last rift pitch.

If this is of no interest, here is a link to the caving!

    The journeys out. ?

Team Griffiths - Makins [Naomi Griffiths nee Makins - ed.]

Arrived at Ramsgate 2 hrs early so had to eat a lot before embarking on ferry. Zapped down to Reinböllen at warp factor 9 to drink beer with Ben et al - missed Ben by 10 mins. Arrived in Staudnwirt at 4pm Sunday having gently grockled round Hallstatt all afternoon.

    Team Fucked-Viva

Arrived at Dover 5 hours early - no decent beer. One fuse stop and a trip round Dachau concentration camp to make Austria seem nice. Arrived in a piece after 16 hours.

    Becky

The most problematical part of my journey was getting to Victoria for a 6-O'Clock train. This accomplished, train, plane, train + train (the last stopping at every lamp post) then feet got me to Staudnwirt around 6.20pm.

Team Bowers - Van Millingen - Whigglesworth

The hovercraft wasn't full of eels. Stopped at Rheinböllen (NB spelling miss Makins) - the place the crab broke down 1979 expedition with café with gorgeous little girls in white teeshirts, but it was shut & Julian had gone anyway. Zipped through Austria until a little man waved us down, demanded 100 schillings from John & muttered something about Radar control & 67 kph instead of 50 kph. Staudnwirt in time for several beers.

    TR6 Nicky & Tony

Managed to avoid Plank etc. in Dover, went swimming & drank in the Louis Armstrong. Wended our way towards Austria saving time by not bothering to eat. Nicky slid down a glass partition at a motorway cafe in a dead faint. Went swimming. Hit a highly decorated town (Wasserburg) in the evening before cruising on down via a bar or two to the car park. Walked up to 113 then above, found an open entrance (60' pitch), returned to meet everybody at Bar Fischer (having seen John's car at the car park) before finally finding everybody at the campsite bar.

    Team reclining seats

A featureless thrash from Zeebrugge to Wurzburg for a walk + a sausage, thence to Ingolstadt where Philip's eyes were closing as a consequence of Gail's having given up between Rushden and Cambridge.... Failed to find campsite at Ingolstadt - thrashed on down to a "service station" past Munchen where we crashed on **Reclining Seats** and slept 10 hours. To Grundlsee without incident (to the sound of Gail's snores) and a drink at the OTHER Grundlsee campsite. Spotted Mess tent in between and so set off for a walk up to the plateau...

    BUNDA BASHING DAY 1
    - A gentle day's workout for the old codgers. Went up to 113 and then prospected the area above. Found very little apart from the inevitable snow-plugged shafts. No draughts at all apart from one small choked hole near a prominent gravel bank. By this time we were quite close to the top of the Schwarzmooskogel so off to the top ! Just below the top we almost fell down a great gaping maw. Julian nearly killed himself when a boulder crept up behind and took him for a ride down the shaft. This so disturbed Ben that he lent John his gear and John went down. We ran out a 40m rope getting down to 30m in stages. A small 5m pitch and then a larger pitch into a high canyon. This was getting serious enough to be left for another day, so we did that. Then the shortcut back to the Bergrestaurant. 1½ hours later we arrived back at the path. The gentle day's workout had taken a nasty turn and four very knackered old codgers arrived at the car park 2 hours after leaving "The Hole".

Sign the visitors book at the top and then drop down, slightly right, for 100 yds and there's the entrance.

While Naomi sunned her delicate white flesh, I hopped down the entrance pitch. 10m down the next pitch, a rebelay and an 10m to a boulder floor, another 5m pitch, more boulders and a final airy bolt, specially placed for Ben's delight tomorrow.

    Prospecting
    - Followed the joint up above Stellerweg (bearing 220°). Found 2 phreatic draughting entrances which we followed until they went vertical. They draught IN. Then onto the small pimple which is the top of the ridge above Stellerweg. I managed to step on a rock which wasn't too solid and fell 20feet, but only a few grazes. Then parallel to the ridge, with lots of signs of the Germans (beer cans etc.) Found a big depression with a 45° bedding plane down which closed down after ~15m. There was a ~10m pitch on the opposite side which we descended to a choke. Then onto a very distinctive (sink when wet) - with brown gravel banks and a limestone bridge. From here due south found ~100m through trip - lot of snow banks, icicles, ice stalagtites + some phreatic tubes, but no ways on. There were 4 entrances, two of them non-climbable shafts. Then back parallel to the ridge, with very few leads. We almost made the path directly above Stellerweg, but descended too soon and hit 201 at 88.

    - Schwarzmooskögel route proved best way. Lots of chamois. Julian belted down to John's 'airy' bolt & down 80ft shaft. Bottom choked by boulders with small impenetrable rift - through which could be heard tantalising heavy drip. 30ft down shaft is a big boulder. On the other side is a passage 25ft up heading in the direction of the drip - by this time Ben had finished putting in two bolts on the entrance pitch & arrived down to have a fag while Julian started bolting up towards this passage. He was even called upon to lifeline when Julian was 3 bolts up leaving one more for John to climb to GLORY.

    142 - surveying 132 142 Wed 27th
Latchensechsen is as hard as ever, and this short trip seemed more tiring than thirty hours down 115. Still, plenty of time to get fit. Poked around in the huge chamber, but the boulders are too big - size of houses. Surveyed in, and buggered off out.

    - the diabolical datsun nearly made the car park in one go, but then boiled over very loudly indeed !

Went to "the pitch near the entrance" where Wiggy tried very hard to kill himself by putting his weight on a hold which broke off. Much of the other stuff at the top (in fact, all down) is of the same ilk. The pitch is ~20m w a break at 10m*, going to a small rift with a howling gale. Bashed our way through a squeeze into another small rift - still with howling gale - which chokes.

    Becky

*Put a bolt in on the right hand wall (mainly to calm Wiggy's nerves) but actually used a fine natural belay on the other side of the hole, reached by traversing to the left.

    - It seemed like a good idea to drive up to the car park and walk around to the Wildensee for a swim. Sadly, the temperature was rather high so that those of us who were feeling the effects of the previous day found the going a little tougher than those who weren't so much but were feeling the effects of the heat anyway. What's more its a long way to the Wildensee, but ideal for swimming, excellent diving points, lots of little fish nibbling at your legs etc. The return via the Appelhaus was arranged by the proprietors such that one felt slightly thirsty. One amongst us managed to bop their first pint rather quickly (excellent one should add) and a further ¾ pint led to a lot of limb waving along the continuation of the path. A high speed surge lasted about 35 minutes before it collapsed completely and the eventual return to base was rather more subdued.

Surface survey and Prospecting below 115.
    - The aim was to find the end of the Futility Series popping out of the hillside below 115. We surface surveyed down to a permanent station, marked with bolt hole and lots of red paint: P1983/1. This was almost directly below 115 and on the edge of the big trees. It was at E77.2, N-237.3, H -195.8, whereas the end of the Futility Series was at G30: E 139.7, N -54.2, H-187.8. So we were (!) at the right place, but the cave end was 180m into the hillside. We had a good look round but didn't find any signs of caves there.

So we looked at a big phreatic entrance further east (up the valley) and ~50m higher. This was looked at in 1982, but a bit of proddling released lots of boulders + we were able to follow up a narrowing bedding plane at ~60°, for 10m until it got too loose/small. Very difficult descent on scree to the end of the Altausseer See + then the Schniderwirt for Weizen Bier.

    Prospecting below Vd. Schwartzmooskogel
    - We sechsten through the Latchen towards the SMK, and reached the top after a leisurely lunch on a snow patch. First we inspected the entrance to EXCS's cave and then moved east on the southern side of the hill as far as the first big valley. Descended a couple of shafts which didn't go, and for the next time left a large shaft not descended and another draughting hole with 40m pitch to a big chamber and 10m pitch at which we stopped. These were both marked 'CUCC 1983' and put a cross on one of the choked shafts (20m). The other cave descended was 40m entrance pitch (daylight) then down a slot and 7m boulder slope to the head of an estimated 10m pitch (undescended).

    - After a very sweaty walk up to the top of the Schwartzmoos and down to the cave, Ben and I set about doing a surface survey. The cave entrance was measured first giving an opening on the surface 9m x 6m with an entrance shaft 15.2m. From the cave entrance a surface survey was carried out to the summit of the Schwartzmoos. The cave lies 126m on a bearing of 194° from the summit of the Schwartzmoos at an altitude of 1796m. (Oh God - I think I've spelt Schwartzmoos wrong all the way through this tome!) After surveying, Ben and I retreated to the Bergrestaurant to work out the survey, identifying wild flowers on the way down.

    - After getting the car up to the plateau we had an easy walk up to 113 - heading up towards the knoll. Unfortunately Tony found another hole he felt impelled to investigate before we got to where we were originally going. Whilst Tony messed around underground, I did some snow melt experiments - and waited. Having reached the bottom at about 28 metres - Tony gave up and we set out again for the Knoll. Near the summit, we located two more holes - to be investigated next day. From the top of the knoll saw Julian/John sitting above their cave on the SMK - then made our way back indirectly to the car park via the thickest bunde patches.

    - Returned to the hole - thrashing up to the col & over the top, eager to revel in the glory just one bolt away. I placed the bolt while Julian took hero pictures. Lots of witters followed as I stood in etriers unwilling to launch myself over the top. It was all a waste of time anyway - the passage draughted but closed down after ~20 ft. Then went back down to the bottom - just to confirm there were no loose ends. But there was just one very loose end. Julian pretended not to notice it, but I insisted he should have a look, while I held back the boulders to allow his return. Another pitch of 8m led to an even more conclusive choke. Exited, detackling the lower pitches.

Wandered back home, prospecting on the way, and found a horizontal passage strongly draughting out. Will return tomorrow...

    Koppenbrüllehöhle - Friday 29th July
    - Super firework display provided by the heavens together with torrential downpour cancelled all caving activities, except for fine trip down the Koppenbrüllehöhle: EXCS's trip was made even more exciting by seeing a completely dry stream bed on entering the cave, not being able to visit the lower part of the show cave due to flooding, and finding a stream the size of the Wharfe coming out when we came out. The food + drink on this trip was excellent - being consumed in large quantities.

Picked up the tackle from the first hole & trekked over the Schwarzmooskogel for the last time. Reentered the new hole complete with tackle. Down the pitch to a chamber. Ignored the obvious hole in the floor, traversed over a snapping (or snapped?) wolf. Up a loose climb and on through phreatic tubes leading down. A bit of a crawl, along and suddenly big, black, nothingness.

    - Returned to look at holes found on Thursday - unfortunately our latest short-cut was no better than previous attempts and we were obliged to find another hole on the way up. Nevertheless we progressed to the phreatic entrance next to the knoll and happily wandered through about 100 ft of passage before reaching an intermittently draughting tube slightly blocked by boulders. We abandoned this in favour of our second inward draughting rift. Tony descended the first pitch to find that the 'solid floor' consisted of a few boulders and having reached a point where a further bolt was required directly beneath these now mobile elements a retreat was made in order to clear this section. Nicky then removed most of the boulders whilst dangling from a sling and Tony then descended, placed a bolt, landed on the "floor". This turned out to be a boulder the size of the mess tent jammed across the rift. Tony placed one bolt for the continuation of the order of 100ft below. Then retreated once more. We continued to the hole we had found on our very first sortie but had not managed to return to since. Nicky wandered out over some boulders to place a bolt hanging from her toenails to give a nice freehang. Time ran out but inward draught was promising. We returned to the car by an even more interesting (but less bunde-prone) route.

    136 - Cave marked (4) on Planc's sketch. 136
After the excesses of the past couple of days we thought we'd better get underground. We rigged a traverse line from the entrance down to the top of the first pitch, went down and rigged a couple of pitches down to where we could hear the stream. Unfortunately we could only hear it because the way on was through a 4" slot.

Mike found a short crawl to an inlet - active with a small dribble, much like the 115 inlets in dry weather - and below a couple of short, semi-free-climbable pitches we came to a decent drop, obviously right over the stream. It sounded enormous ! We bolted & Mike descended. The streamway is in a rift, and soon disappeared into boulders - foiled again ! The only lead now is a biggish pitch which is nasty & loose but may bring us back below the choke in the stream.

    - We first bolted in no. (3) (138) on the sketch, a fine descent led to a snow slope, and after descending a snow filled rift by front-pointing in wellies, to a snow choked chamber at -40m. Pity. After checking a 13m blind shaft we found a rift entrance (139) just below the hillock NE of the VSK, which went to 30m to a rift (12cm) which draughted tantalisingly. Pebbles went another 15m or so

    - Went to visit the hole with the "big black nothingness". Ben's bowel movements increased in frequency the nearer we got to this fine feature. At the top, Ben wanged in the first bolt before retiring hurt. Muddy Boy continued on down looking for unlikely places for bolts. He'd rigged 2 x 20m pitches before Julian caught up. Another 20m pitch to a ledge then a pitch rigged off a spike. Julian descended this to the floor of the shaft and realised Muddy Boy had been left on a ledge with the rope nowhere in sight. Leaving Muddy Boy to worry about this he squeezed through into another aven with the stream trench cutting down. A bolt was placed for the next 10-15m pitch before an exit was made (we'd run out of rope). Muddy Boy was reunited with the rope and both went out.

Before all this happened or while it was happening, Julian and Naomi had followed the phreatic tube beyond the "hole". Across a traverse the passage continued to two free climbs up and a climb round a flake to a further phreatic passage. Half way along this the draught emanated from a choked passage on the right. Beyond a 12m pitch dropped into twin avens and a further undescended pitch estimated to be 20m.

After all this happened, or in some cases while it was all happening, Naomi and Ben went to look at the crawl at the bottom of the lavatory pan. This was followed until either Ben's light gave out (official version) or Ben got fed up (unofficial shit-stirrer's version, in either case only about 60').

    That's all.

Returned via the most direct obvious route in just one hour to where we were last. Having eventually changed - Tony wanged down 1st pitch after carefully checking the brilliant bolting. Whilst putting in another bolt over a possible 13ft free climb Nicky climbed up over the boulders to look into the adjoining entrance shaft, lighted from above. At bottom of "free" climb, lobbed rocks of various sizes down a hole - very scary. Fixed two not so well placed bolts above 2nd/3rd pitch at the end of short rift - and having estimated it to be a good 25m went on swiftly out and back across the SMK to find a few more promising holes for other people to go down. ANYWAY we throttled around a _lot_ at the level of the entrance series of 45° interconnected rift and found a 4m x 12m chamber, approx 65m high with a pitch take off 15m down from the roof and v big jammed boulders 15m down from that. Surveyed from there back to near the entrance.

    - With the air of a man selling bits of the real cross, Tony assured us this was the one. After slagging his bolting technique, it didn't take long to use 100m of Edelrid; bash in a bolt, drop down a free hanging 30m shaft, traverse to head of next pitch, bash in a bolt. Spacious shafts, textbook rigging, the draught still inwards, we were thoroughly enjoying ourselves. At about -140m, we came to a sad end - at the foot of the final shaft a very narrow joint led off, which would take quite a bit of hammering to allow even Chas through ! The draught whistled inwards, and the rift looked 10m deep, widening after a few feet. After a considerable snack, we hurried out. V. efficient trip, and an inspection of the 115/41 survey later seems to show that the end is very near, both horizontally and depthwise, to Stellerweg around the big pitch. So at least we're in the right area.

    - While Muddy Boy fought off nasty gastric microbes and Ben festered, Julian and Naomi returned to 'Wolf Cave' to survey as much as possible. The cave was surveyed to the climb out of the wolf skeleton chamber, all the side passages being measured and investigated. Just inside the 2nd entrance a small passage was found to draught strongly inwards - this passage breaking out into a small rift leading to a pitch down, estimated to be about 6m. Several photographs were taken of the 'Wolf' skeleton as well as one of the main phreatic passage and the 1st pitch.

As carbide, water etc. were running low, an exit was made from the cave. On gaining the surface a survey was made from the entrance of 'Wolf' cave past the 2nd entrance and down to CUCC 82. Wolf cave is 29.5m above 82.

    - Having excited Dave + Pete to such an extent that they were willing to go down our previous hole, we led them more or less the same way back to the hole beneath the knoll and left them while they went off to collect their caving gear. We continued the 100 yds and one bedding over to the east to extend our other inward draughting hole. Tony changed and lay gasping in the extreme heat while Nicky went off to try to pinch some MRs from D + P - none available so Tony just rerigged as he went and descended a further 75' pitch (rather fine though not quite freehanging) which landed on a large boulder strewn ledge. Several large (tent-size) boulders formed the edge of the next pitch in a rift 15' wide heading east - the visible floor consisted of three (visible) large holes, one of which allowed boulders to drop for a count of 9, possibly 4-5 seconds. Prospects do not seem unreasonable but a free hang would require an interesting bit of work for bolting. Good luck to those who take over from us. Finding our way back was not as simple as the way over to the knoll.

    TUESDAY 2nd August
    - Managed on this major GONK DAY to do some prospecting on the Toplitzsee by row-boat - bloody magic. Lots of large holes in the surrounding cliffs and entered one near lake level draughting out very strongly. Suggestions that in future years a raft should be built in the centre of the lake with detachable portions for each tent allowing p.i.t.a. to be detached and floated away. This central position would allow for easy freedom of movement. Furthermore from the Kammersee a rope would be rigged off the 300ft+ cliff for abseil + prussick work to exclude all the horrible walking up steep slopes. The total potential could be as much as 1000m+, one of the lakeside waterfalls being shown as a resurgence at about 1300 metres. Anyway, whatever the depth potential this area has certainly not been looked at and the potential for finding complex systems would appear quite extensive. (Rowing across the lake is more pleasant than trudging across the bunde).

    - Following the stream down, pitches of 5m, 15.4m, 15.4m, 10.5m and 17.4m were rigged. The latter two pitches formed the top part of another large shaft and landed on a very wet ledge. Muddy boy valiantly put another bolt in well round a corner to try to keep out of the water. This was descended for about 10m in a spacious shaft*. With the amount of spray around and complete dearth of lobbable boulders it wasn't possible to tell whether the rope reached so M.B. wisely decided to ascend. Estimated depth of cave to head of last pitch 160m. Length of pitches (from entrance) - all measured.

    - Went down tube followed by rift near lower entrance. At bottom of rift 6m pitch was bolted. Lands in chamber with hole & boulder slope into bigger shaft, fortunately only another 6m with large boulder passage leading down to top of climb. On right, small phreatic tube with strong outward draught (on a day with a lot of water about) gets too small for me after 20-30 feet. At start of tube pulled out a few boulders to reveal 20 ft climb, but continued presence of boulders at the top called an abort. Climb down at bottom of boulder passage is 8ft. Leads to further climb down, luckily choked by more boulders. Passage to left at bottom of 8ft climb goes to black muddy dry pool fed by water from climb above. Climb gets too small vertically but leads back horizontally to top of 8ft climb. Derigged two pitches - unless the big pitch route stops soon 20 ft climb with continued presence of boulder not worth doing: probably lead to 82 anyway.

    - The weather in camp brightened somewhat so we zoomed up to the Bergrestaurant and gazed at the low cloud. Eventually extreme boredom forced us to walk up to the cave to collect our oversuits which would have blown away in the savage storms of the previous few days. It was snowing hard when we reached the top of the SMK but unfortunately we could see our wooftah suits clearly so after a bit of wittering we shook the snow from our furry gear, clenched our teeth and descended.....

It sounded deep & very wet so Mike stayed at the top of the rift & froze silently while Chas. gardened & rigged the topsail rope. At the bottom of the rift ~50-60m 2 black holes - a dry very deep sounding one - which was left and a damp 35m shaft into a streamway rift going down at least 100' and producing another couple of black holes. The draught had reversed today even though outside was still warmer than the horrible hole. Despite attempts to fill the place with boulders, dead bodies* & rope ends, it still seems to be going so someone will have to go & derig it. The walk back was accomplished in zero vis & torrential rain & hail, sod this for a game of cricket. 4 hrs

Phil & Gail also finally defestered themselves from the Bergrestaurant to discover pastures new in 132/6. The weather was Lake District disgusting and it hailed as we hacked up the bunde. After attempts to correlate the two surveys, the 2nd pitch was bolted in the dripping chamber which was, under _these_ weather conditions, filled with spray. Well, perhaps not _filled_. Anyway, while doing this, there came a minor whooshing sound at about 18-45 and it got a little wetter + I dropped a hanger + MR down the pitch. Finished bolt (at least 1.500x103 Kgf on the Brindle scale (est.)) and didn't rig it because it looked wet down there...

Instead, went out of chamber and pulled up rope out of the water (the bolt below in the chamber was not rigged) and left 1x13m and 1x15m rope there for next time, the rope on the pitch is 35m, I think. Then we clambered up Wiggy's Way (45° up and intersected the same stream higher up - excellent clamberable stream in clean, white limestone, a bit like Tatty but sharper. If this cave connects with 41 then this would be the way to get extra height. Gail did a couple of legs up the slope (whilst Philip was bolting) but gets a bit damp so return trip in dry weather. Back to main route to have a look at the Big Chamber - failed to find it AGAIN. Sketch a lot of drips and chambers, find a crawl bypass to the Bad Step (we think).

Salzburg - Friday 5th Mass Jacking Day
    - We went to Salzburg to do the round of the gear shops (courtesy of Wiggy) and to consume coffee and strudels. A hopeful-looking gear shop was spotted on the way in but turned ghostly when we sought nearer aquaintance. Chas & Wiggy drooled over about 5 gear shops in total, buying 2m of 4mm rope.

Team FARTPOWER blasted into Salzburg and found an English looking pub for a meal of Schnitzel and chips. After a look around the castle we found a fine dingy bar for cakes, coffee, and beer.

Team Kulture left team gearshops after a Deli lunch in the street. Took in the Resident Galeris and the Dom, looked at the [???] outside the Dom Museum and thus avoided paying entry fee. As a token gesture we looked at calculators to fill in time before rendezvousing with team gear shop.

    142 - connection 142/41
    - After a long wet walk up to the entrance, the intrepid trio finally went underground. The pitch in Phil's extension was quickly gained and Julian kitted up and went off down the 1st pitch of 7m to a pile of jammed boulders. From this platform another pitch of 20m to a rebelay and another 10m to a floor lead on. From this a pitch of 5m reached another floor with a stream leading on down, which was not pushed to a conclusion.

    - bottom of pitch + bottom of pitch
Julian exploring at bottom of pitch
While Julian was exploring the pitches, Phil and Naomi worked back towards the main route climbing up assorted 45° ramps towards the roof. One particular one was followed up some steep climbs to a pot with water falling down it. down the pot, a 20' (approx) climb lead to a boulder floor - the ascent of the pot would need tackle and so was left. Phil and Naomi arrived back at Phil's pitch just as Julian was grovelling up to the top.

All the tackle from Phil's pitches was moved back to the main route junction and the trio then left to find the Main Route Big Pitch Route into the large chamber.
    - connection + connection
    connection 142/41
Various ramps and tubes were investigated and the ramp/chamber leading to the big pitch was pretty well investigated - a route being pushed down to the bottom where it chokes. Near the top, on the right, a route was pioneered down a tube and across a ramp and then up a freeclimb at the end of the ramp. At the top of the ramp turn right and this comes into a very large sloping chamber. Descend to the bottom of the chamber and next to a very large block is the old landing of the 18m pitch in Stellerweg. Julian and Naomi and Phil then climbed up from the block and down into the Stellerweg double traverse passage where Julian positively identified the bolt hole - so the connection was confirmed. The trio then made their way back to the entrance, taking several photos on the way out.

Investigated various large dry streambeds near Nagelsteghöhle in an attempt to find the same. A large draughting hole marked 1626/5 was found between two streambeds which consisted of a 15' climb down to a shingle slope leading down into the cave. Party retired to the pub.

    _Addendum_

Later examination of a selection of maps displaying relevant markers such as the toll road and the ski lift leave us with the impression that the resurgence has been bulldozed to make the track to the skilift pylon.

Moving west, we lost the main way on by descending a mud wall and then a steep boulder slope for quite a way. Eventually hit a streamway which soon resembled Purgatory too much for our liking, so made a slow exit. Left rope for next trip.

Yes, the tube is tight but, after tweaking the solid surface with our trusty "entrenching" tool, we were able to plough our way through. It leads, after 30 or 40 ft and a bend to a 1.5m diameter phreatic tube, left hand leads up (at c 5°) to a chamber and right chokes with mud after a bit.

Quickly made our way to the 'Big Leap' where Wiggy was duely despatched over the leap and into the passages beyond to collect a rope and bolt driver. On Wiggy's return the pair then surveyed their way out towards Wolf Chamber from the lip of the 'Big Leap'. Surveying went relatively smoothly except for multiple light failure in the tight pitch by-pass crawl and a very opaque compass (it would _not_ clear!). Finally, in the main passage towards the Toilet Seat Climb, the compass fogged forever, the survey was abandoned and the pair made their way out. On the surface the compass unfogged amd so Wiggy and Naomi did a surface survey from Wolf Höhle entrance to the iron cross on the Col.

142 - Surface surveying (but not the last part) 42-41-?-?-Eishöhle
    - Plank & Julian A gentleman's festering day. Starting at 142, Plank went charging up the schwarzmoos Kogel dragging the surveying tape, intruments and Julian behind him Complaints from Julian that this upward flight was somewhat unnecessary as 41 and 142 were at the same height brought him temporarily to his senses and he disappeared for a while into a particularly virulent patch of bunde. Half an hour later the pair were sat on a bunde nest, scanning eagle-like for the entrance to 41. This was spotted way below and after a quick visit to a nearby telephone box to change into a chamois outfit the first leg of the surface survey was complete.

From this point on, Plank seemed to have a greater comprehension of where he was meant to be going (although this could have been confused with a continuing desire to get to the top of the Schwarzmoos). Odd grunting and sweet-sucking noises punctuated the next twenty or so legs before the top of Bunter's Bulge hove into sight. Pause for heavy breathing, more sweet sucking and altitude adjustments to the digestive system. Then onto to Bunter's Holes and the end of surveying for the day.

Back on Bunter's Bulge Plank started admiring the sight of his 20' free fall the other day when a line of surface cairns were spotted. Being simple creatures, the pair were lured on, and on, and on, and on, over hill, down dell, etc. till the cairns ran out. Being keen boy scouts though, they spotted a campfire below with plenty of freshly cut bunde beside.

Plank couldn't resist the prospect of even more bunde and chortled off down the slope. As he got lower and lower, his heavy footsteps took on more of an echo. Turning round at the camp fire, his mouth fell open to match the gaping maw of he Eishöhle that faced him. About half an hour of combined wonderment followed before the pair poddled back to the Bergrestaurant. Ignoring enticing party like attachments to the bunde the duo stuck solidly to the cairns (nothing queer with Caruthers, but I'm not sure about Plank). Approx 80 minutes from the Eishöhle we reached the car park. A very long festering day.

Placed a final bolt and plumbed the pitch with the tape but didn't go down it. Depth 194m to top of this pitch which is >30m so at least 224m total depth.

Rigged in as far as the third pitch, but unfortunately I didn't know where the rebelays etc. should be so I rigged it completely crapply and had zillions of rubs and abseiling on single crap bolts. Basically I didn't enjoy it at all, and I was wearing dry grots and Julian's gear so I got cold and wet and thoroughly pissed off. Eventually got about 200m of co-ax out and prussik out just after my 2 hour call out had expired !

Joined the ever increasing gang of solo cavers to look at crawly bit at bottom of 183. Yes, it goes, but it's shit ! Very Mendip crawly (eastwater ?) follow stream, small climbs occ. all in an angled rift (or fault ?). A bit mazy so if one way doesn't go another will. Scared after trying to descend climb head first with crap hand holds, so got out.

Then go to Puffball to retrieve bags of rope JulianS went to get, but Olly & Wooks had got before. Found this out descending 8ft & 10ft pitches at beginning of Piezo "but I'm sure there's a rope here normally". Climb out just, exit, fester a while in sun & met callout 3 hrs early coming to rescue me. scary sometimes.

After waiting for Clive to appear so I could go surveying with someone to hold the other end of the tape, we finally got down 183 late in the evening. We reached the bottom, I tried the rift downstream & hated it so came back.

NO-ONE SEEMS TO HAVE TRIED GOING _UP_STREAM !!!

Probably fruitless, but maybe worth a look.

Surveyed to bottom of fifth ie. end of last survey, when as Clive was pulling up the pitch I heard water. "Clive, be quiet a mo." Jangle - jangle. "Clive ..." Gurgh, gurgh, _ splosh _ a torrent suddenly appears "Oh fuck !" Clive attemts to cut the rope which had just caught under a rock, as I prussik up the 5th pitch. At the top, paranoia convinces me the water is increasing, so I tell Clive to get up the rope. We exit quickly, astounded that the entire cave is rigged out of the water. Nice one folks ! I only wish Clive would appear before I start worrying where he's got to, but he's sensibly taking it slowly. Ho hum.

    Organhöhle- Collecting Organhöhle Camp gear

[author unknown, put in Becka to make parsing work]

Cairned path still pretty good to the right area where we retired? We didn’t have a GPS fix fan? The actual bivy sito?. After finding organhochle we stomped around for a while tring to find the bivy and it was all looking life a wasted trip, argh?, until Nat found the email from Claire listing what was in the camp and that it was in the start of organhöhle. We got it all loaded up and headed back to top camp then down the hill for dinner. So the organhockle bivy stuff has now all been rescued.

Homecoming - long slippery rift in need of rigging

Fri Jul 19 @@ -874,22 +837,20 @@ Cairned path still pretty good to the right area where we retired? We didn’t h I went into Homecoming with Jon, who on a whim returned to the expedition, to sort out some confusion at the far pushing front where Andrew and I had gone. As it turns out, he and Haydon had in fact pushed, surveyed, and rigged the 'long slippery rift in need of rigging' I had mentioned, but at ceiling level rather than where Andrew and I had gone. Misunderstandings had led us to believe that this traverse was left in place when it was in fact de-rigged last expo, and so Jon and I set out rigging the traverse on the existing bolts. We had just enough rope and I was able to stretch the hangars/maillons just enough to reach the end of the traverse, where another pitch down will access this pushing front. This whole area was named the Lizard King, and we eagerly await the data from last year to better illuminate this front.

    Homecoming - Propane Nightmares

[Written by Dan.] Dickon went down Homecoming with Reuben and Aileen to push Propane Nightmares. They went on the upper level phreatic lead, which continued horizontally and then dropped into downward pitches of phreatic passage, in need of more rope to continue pushing. [Dan]

Rad rigged the rope off some handy naturals and I abseiled down it until I was level with our original anchor. From there, I undid the anchor and swung over to the squeeze to pull the rope though that. Once the dead end of the rope was in the big chamber, Rad pulled it up through the boulder choke and to the top of the pitch, where he re-did his natural rigging and abseiled down to level with me, tied a rebelay, and went down to the ground. I grabbed the bags from where we had left them tied to a handy spike and abseiled down to join him.
