Kaninchenh&ouml;hle: 161c (VSS2) entrance
</title>
</head>
<body>
<center><img src="../i/161c.jpg" width=596 height=396></center>
<p>The 161c entrance was originally explored by the
<a href="../../../others/gscb/index.htm">French</a> <b lang="fr">Groupe
Sp&eacute;l&eacute;ologique de Clerval - Baume les Dames</b> under the
name VSS2 in 1988 and 1989, reaching -285m. They abandoned exploration
as it was apparent that it was going to connect into 161, though in fact,
that connection at depth wasn't made until 1995 and entailed the discovery
of a large amount of very impressive passage ! CUCC's explorations pushed
deeper and led to the huge sub-horizontal series off Triassic Park. Since
easier ways into those passages were found further down the mountainside,
this entrance has not been used.

Route to Scarface: last roped climb, 1996
</title>

<body>

<p>The original surface route to the Scarface
(<a href="../../161/sftotp.htm#161d">161d</a>) entrance of
Kaninchenh&ouml;hle pioneered in 1996 had some short roped climbs. The upper
two of these were later bypassed, but the final one is still on the route,
and definitely requires a handline in the wet or when carrying gear. Here,
Gunilla Andr&eacute;e descends the last climb, not far above the entrance.
<p>Behind is the large fault-guided valley which stretches from the
Hochklapf Sattel to the Wildensee. Clearly visible is the path which climbs
out of the 172m deep closed depression in this valley, up to Augstwiesen
Alm, where a cluster of huts can be seen in the summer pasture.

pointed out by Mike and Tina Richardson, at the end of a short surface

south ridge of Hinterer Schwarzmooskogel leading to the 161a entrance.

1623/87: second pitch
</title>
</head>
<body>
<img src="../i/87b.jpg" width=400 height=600 align=left hspace=20 vspace=10>
<p>The second pitch of 1623/87 starts as a small hole following a
steeply dipping roof tube where the floor of the entrance chamber is
almost choked by boulders. The second bolt is just before the pitch starts
to open out and drop below this tube. Nick Thorne is seen here on the
thrutchy top section of the pitch about to reach the bolt.<br clear=all>

Sonnenstrahlh&ouml;hle: Bottom of Purple Pit
</title>
</head>
<body>
<center><img src="../i/purple.jpg" width=400 height=600></center>
<p>Simon Kellet reaching the bolt at the head of the drier hole below the
broken 60m Purple Pit in Sonnenstrahlh&ouml;hle (1623/113). This is a very
short drop ending in a diminutive stream from which the way on is obscure.
Seven years after this photo was taken, cavers reached this point again from
Bananah&ouml;hle (1623/152) which came in down a pitch to the right of this
picture.

Stellerweg area: walk in via path 201
</title>
</head>
<body>
<center><img src="../i/via201.jpg" width=595 height=477></center>
<p>Shortly beyond Egglgrube, the 201 path climbs into an area of karren on
a wooded slope south of Vorderer Schwarzmosskogel. This is looking back
towards the Br&auml;uning Wall from a short way along, nearing the laser
point marking cave 1623/28. (Also the junction with the route which leads to
the upper entrances of the Stellerweg system and the shoulder of the
Vorderer Schwarzmooskogel).
