Path 201 on the
walk in to the CUCC exploration areas. Stellerweghöhlensystem's
sump (898m below the main entrance) is almost vertically below the
grass slope with the shadows on the right of the photo. The approach to
that cave lies on the main 201 path up that slope. The plateau approach
goes over the grassy col and left to Bräuning Alm directly behind
the grassy hill in the centre. It then climbs the wooded slopes to the
right of this to the low col just right of centre. Top Camp is behind
Bräuning Nase, the peak in the centre of the skyline.

The impoverished mainly-undergraduate expedition of 1978 produced its
base camp mess tent from a tent-frame which someone was throwing out and
a 24 foot square sheet of heavy gauge polythene. This made a splendid
place to watch the Austrian thunderstorms but also formed the most
effective fly and wasp trap base camp has ever had.

The Bräuning Wall seen from cucc/9605, a cave situated quite

From this sort of angle, Bräuning Zinken is the best peak for
bearings, as the two lower points to the left are less clearly defined.
The east edge of Loser or the radio mast on Hochanger make good points
for extra (confirmatory) bearings. Choose also a peak at approx right angles

Cooking chips - expedition style

Higher than the average standard of expedition cuisine, this almost-full
dutch oven of rapidly frying chips* on a swinging barbeque over an open fire
is much more indicative of the safety standards of expo cooking. Surprisingly
enough, the chips were successfully cooked and safely removed without the
expected conflagration !

* US translation for our international audience: when a Brit says "chips",
an American would say "French fries".

eventually found at a depth of 36m, but rather more excitement was

These turned out to be part of a local man who had fallen from a boat

Hallstatt is a real festerer's haven - a picturesque lakeside village with
all the advantages of Ice-cream, sticky buns, bier and the added bonus of a
gear shop and diving school where the divers can get bottles filled. Owing to
lack of flat space, the main road goes through the village in a tunnel, and
there is no free parking. To avoid the crowds of like-minded touroid
drongoes, it helps to pedal sedately around the lake, drinking bier and
sunbathing, as demonstrated here by Chris Densham, Jenny Moss and Becka
Lawson. The photographer must be on one, too....

is unusual on the plateau, and this has proved to be an exceptionally useful
base, despite being exposed to the frequent poor weather. The view is in the

Erin Lynch at the summit of the Vorderer Schwarzmookogel (1843m) - a
useful landmark in a sea of dwarf pine, and an important point for
various surface surveys. A glance through the summit book shows that
the summit is visited more often by CUCC parties during the summer than
by everyone else combined, all year :-) It is not really an especially
attractive walkers' peak from any direction, but is a good ski peak
during the winter when all the lumps and bushes are smoothed out.

Rope washing in river behind Staud'n'wirt

One advantage of basecamp at the Gasthof Staud'n'wirt is the river
(Grundlseer Traun) which is not only a cool festering spot and excellent
swimming location, but also provides us with some turbulence from a weir
which is an ideal place for washing ropes and other gear at the end of
each expedition. This only becomes desperate if the river is in high
flood, when standing anywhere near the edge of the weir becomes very
dodgy indeed !

Doug Florence's "Yellow Peril" at Swanage

The "Yellow Peril", an ex-GPO telephones JU-250 van owned by Doug
Florence had proved a faithful (if not always very reliable) form of club
transport for some time before its trip to Austria in 1978. It had a new
short engine just for the trip, as well as a new and astoundingly comfy rear
bench seat welded in the day before departure. This didn't stop the
alternator dying at Tunbridge Wells, but after that it performed heroically.
Occasional use was made of a standard JU-250 exhaust repair kit, but driver
and passengers were usually happy enough to consume the beans or rice
pudding from this in order to effect the repair.... As the photo shows,
such tins were just part of over 350 Kg of food which we took out on the
1978 expedition.
