(Christ's 1975-8) started caving shortly before university, and joined CUCC
|
||||
at the first opportunity. Didn't miss a single term-time meet in his three
|
||||
years as a student, and only missed one vacation meet - keen, or what ? CUCC
|
||||
Secretary 1976/77 and Junior Treasurer 1977/78. Invited to join Austria
|
||||
expedition in 1977 and formed part of "team youth" who found and started
|
||||
exploring <a href="../../plateau/76.htm">Eislufthöhle</a>.
|
||||
|
||||
<p>Took a major part in 1978 and 1979 expeditions which finally bottomed
|
||||
this cave at -506m. Tried to organise a change of area for 1980, but had
|
||||
underestimated the politics involved, so returned to Loser where he and
|
||||
Mike Burgess found a new way on just inside the entrance to
|
||||
<a href="../../smkridge/41/41.htm">Stellerweghöhle</a>, subsequently to
|
||||
become CUCC's deepest ever exploration. Missed 1981 owing to
|
||||
<a href="../../../jnl/1982/mexico.htm">caving in Mexico</a>
|
||||
and being at the International Congress of Speleology in the USA, then came
|
||||
along in 1982, 1984.
|
||||
|
||||
<p>Next joined expo early on in the exploration of
|
||||
<a href="../../smkridge/161/top.htm">Kaninchenhöhle</a> in 1989, and
|
||||
again 1990, 1993, 1995 and 1996, 1998. Currently jointly holds the record for
|
||||
expedition attendance with <a href="miketa.htm">Mike Richardson</a> (12
|
||||
times), though hasn't done anything like as much caving on the last few
|
||||
expeditions.
|
||||
|
||||
<p>Recently Andy's main rôle has been as a link with the early
|
||||
expeditions and as archivist, pulling together many of the scattered and
|
||||
fragmented details of past exploration into what has become the website you
|
||||
see around you (see <a href="../../../c21bs.htm">site genesis</a> article).
|
||||
Many of the surface photographs on the site, and just a tiny
|
||||
number of the underground ones were taken by Andy, who also did most of the
|
||||
image mastering work for the site.
|
||||
|
||||
<p>Apart from CUCC and Austria, Andy joined the
|
||||
<a href="http://www.pennine.demon.co.uk/NPC/">Northern Pennine Club</a> in
|
||||
1976, becoming its Recorder and Librarian shortly afterwards, and holding
|
||||
that post for fourteen years. He now holds the newly created post of NPC
|
||||
Webmaster. In 1981, took part in the annual <b lang="es">Proyecto
|
||||
Espeleologico Purificación</b> of the Association for Mexican Cave
|
||||
Studies, visiting the <span lang="es">Purificación</span> system for
|
||||
two months. The project surveyed over 5km of new cave that year, taking its
|
||||
length over that of the UK's Easegill system.
|
||||
|
||||
<p>Also took part in NPC trips to <b lang="es">Cueva Culiembro</b> in the
|
||||
Cares gorge of the Picos de Europa in Northern Spain. This was originally a
|
||||
spin-off from the Oxford University Caving Club expedition, later getting
|
||||
permission independantly. The main objective was for three NPC divers to push
|
||||
the main upstream sump. Not a diver himself, Andy's main rôle here was
|
||||
as sherpa and surveyor. Other trips, not all under the aegis of cucc/exCS,
|
||||
have seen Andy caving in the USA, French Pyrenees, Vercors, Belgian Ardennes
|
||||
and Majorca.
|
||||
|
||||
<p>Most recently, Andy has been coopted as the webmaster of the
|
||||
<a href="http://www.sat.dundee.ac.uk/~arb/surveying/csg.html">BCRA Cave
|
||||
Surveying Group</a>, and is responsible for taking issues of
|
||||
<a href="http://www.chaos.org.uk/survex/cp/cpinfo.htm">Compass Points</a>
|
||||
from the editor (<a href="wookey.htm">Wookey</a>) and putting them up on the
|
||||
web.
|
||||

from the earliest age allowed, and hence in the late seventies was a frequent

caving (and drinking) companion to the various CUCC members who also joined
|
||||
NPC at that time. He came on the CUCC expedition of 1980 in which we had a go
|
||||
at changing area to the Tennengebirge, and is one of the only two members who
|
||||
actually flogged up to the area of interest, only to find the French in
|
||||
residence and already at some depth in Batmanschacht. We soon changed area
|
||||
back to Loser, where Budge took part in the exploration of
|
||||
<a href="../../smkridge/113.htm">Sonnenstrahlhöhle</a> and
|
||||

||||
One of those responsible for revisiting

<a href="../../smkridge/161/sibria.htm#siberia">Siberia</a>
|
||||
in 1997 and descending the 70m
|
||||
<a href="../../smkridge/161/sibria.htm#seproblem">Somebody Else's
|
||||
Problem</a>. In 1998, he and Steve Bellhouse pushed this down another large
|
||||
pitch, <a href="../../smkridge/161/sibria.htm#moscow">Midnight in Moscow</a>,
|
||||
and a series of shorter drops to a pretty definite conclusion at a new deep
|
||||
point of 533m (527m below the original entrance).
|
||||
|
||||
<p>Now also a member of the Technical Speleological Group at "The Chapel"
|
||||
in Castleton, in England's Peak District.
|
||||

||||

<p>Came on the 1977, 78, 79 and 80 expeditions and played a major part in the

||||
exploration of Eislufthöhle (-506m) including the bottoming trip of
|
||||

Nicky Davies (Kings, 1977-80, Committee 1977-80) showed great promise on her
|
||||
first novice meet by following the leader into the most squalidly muddy bit
|
||||
of Merlins and emerged more cheerful than anyone else. She happily bottomed
|
||||
Penyghent on New Years' Eve (her tenth trip) and a few days later was handed
|
||||
a tackle bag with 300' of stiff 11mm rope which she carried through the
|
||||
abominable approach to Vulcan Pot in Nick Pot without a squeak. She is now a
|
||||
leading fell runner (although already a "veteran"!).

||||
|

down to -900m. Unfortunately, a career in rather far-flung places prevented

||||
his coming on expo again for the somewhat gentler caving of the following
|
||||
years.

<p>The photograph was taken at his wedding in the unlikely setting of
|
||||
Coire Lagan, far from the road in Skye, with the lay preacher from Kintail
|
||||
(and his dog !) officiating.

1989 to show the current crop of relatively inexperienced expeditioners how

it should be done. Pete and a hand-picked crew stormed down Flapjack in two
|
||||
trips in <span lang="de">Kaninchenhöhle</span> to establish a deep point
|

inches shy of -500m, which remained the deepest point of the cave until 1998.

in <span lang=de>Altausseer See</span> and at various resurgences).<br>
|
||||
As well as being in CUCC and exCS, Mike joined the
|
||||
<a href="http://www.pennine.demon.co.uk/NPC/">Northern Pennine Club</a>.
|
||||
He soon took up cave diving (and therefore joined the
|
||||
<a href="http://www.sat.dundee.ac.uk/~arb/speleo/cdg.html">Cave Diving
|
||||
Group</a>), being at one time the only diver in the Dales
|
||||
with a 100% record for passing virgin sumps at the first dive (OK, so it
|
||||
was only 2 feet long :-). Diving took him on the NPC expeditions to Northern
|
||||
Spain (especially <span lang=es>Cueva Culiembro</span> in the Cares
|
||||
Gorge).<br>
|
||||
Mike still cave dives, and even caves, occasionally (in between flying a
|
||||
light aircraft), despite being confined to a wheelchair after a ski-touring
|
||||
accident.<br>
|
||||
The photo was taken at the Lost Johns' carpark on Leck Fell - note the
|
||||
tatty canoeing helmet, as used by many cave divers (the holes let the
|
||||
air out when diving).

Tim Vasby-Burnie (Trinity 1997-2000, President 1998-99, Dinner organiser

1999-2000). CUCC were going through a "thin" patch in the late nineties,
|
||||
and Tim, one of the more enthusiastic of another small intake of new
|
||||
members, very gamely volunteered to lead the 1998 expedition when Julian
|
||||
Haines retired to the back benches with "leader fatigue". The expedition,
|
||||
a small one, went well. Tim was mostly involved in exploration in
|
||||
Kaninchehöhle via the 161d entrance.
|
||||
|
||||

A tireless campaigner for more women on expeditions, and the most faithful

female expeditioner on the records (even came out twice one year, having

to nip back to the UK for an interview).
